Couple of sweet work areas there DeeCee and AussieModler. Always interesting to see how others set their stuff up. The led on the hutch is custom made from led stop off flea bay and an old 12v power supply. Believe it or not, I need more light from behind and above. Oh and a bar fridge.

Wow, just been looking through this you guys are lucky ! !
I've not got a modelling area, at all ! In one cupboard is around 20 model boxes, 3 or 4 are under construction, and the rest are full of spares. In a slim draw is modelling bits, tools, glue etc.. I've got a low cupboard, and when I do any kits i get out what I need and then replace everything after. Apart from a small display case, which has about 7 or 8 kits, you would never know I build anything when entering my bedroom ! And I can't spray indoors, have to go out in the garage ! Funny thing is I've not got a single kit unbuilt, as I said 3 or 4 are under construction, but nothing at all unmade ! If i want a new kit i usually keep to a rule of buying a new one only after I've finished one, guess this is why I don't own many ! ! Over the years a lot of my finished kits just get stripped for parts, and re-used !
I probably sound super organised, but I'm not ! Just got a small bedroom with no room Lol ! !

There's some change underway in my build space. My youngest son has always been interested in H.O railways courtesy of his Pop's layout so he decided he'd like to build his own, by himself so when the time comes that Pop can't fix his any more, Will knows what to do. As such, the display cupboard and small bench that were on the left wall have gone to new homes. The cupboards are flat pack jobs that we got from the local Bunnings Hradware store. Didn't use kickboards to keep the layout height as he wanted. The alcove in the corner was where Lou (wife) had her stuff set up. She has now moved to my bench where Will was. She also nabbed ALL the cupboard and draw space under the close end of the layout. Will has the far end LHS cupboards. Added a small island bench to my side of the room. I did have to add an extra shelf to my drying/work in progress cupboard to free a bit more space and to keep things out of the way during construction.

WOW, your model room is near as big as my house. Rail does take up a lot of room, i had a Scalectrix track for a few years, and that was the same... lots of room... but you still have a cool work room mate.

Thanks gents, we've done the in a corner of the bedroom, shed, dining room table etc etc but at least this way everything can be left as is and just shut the door and the place looks tidy. Personally I reckon I could fill the room on my own but I've been told to play nice

Here is my inner sanctum. We moved into this house in October 2018, and for pete's sake, who uses a formal dining room? This space was allocated straightaway. I scoured the ads and came up with 6 teachers desks and went to town. The two largest ones, 66 x 36 and 64.5 x 34.5 respectively serve as the "command center". These desks are bargains. They are so big that people just want them gone. I paid $30 and $50 for them. SCORE!! I removed the tops from the other two wooden desks and made the "bank of drawers" for the corner. Masonite for the top. This also serves as the stereo stand and "mood center" with the lava lamp. emotion-11 I then removed the four metal drawer sections from the two desks with fiber tops and steel frames and stacked them to make filing cabinets. I cut down one of the wooden tops to make tops for them. Then I cut the steel crossmembers out of the frames and had a bodyman at work reweld them to the leading edge of the frame. These desks became my paint station and my wife's sewing center. I finished this project just in time to join the forum and get busy using them. Guys you should really keep your eyes open for these types of desks. They have acres of storage, can be locked, and ground the room. I love them.

Cheers guys. Dale, you're right. If I can't build a good model, there is something wrong. No excuses. Happy and grateful to have this set up. Les, what I like about the storage situation is that nothing has to be "out" unless it needs to be. I noticed that I would get partway into the build then start to bog down. I was surrounded by sanding sticks, pliers, jars of paint, etc. I figured out that if I put away everything that was not directly related to the labor operation I was actually doing I could think more clearly and was more focused. It was a huge help. For me cluttered desk equals cluttered mind. And conversely.

Cool. I'd love to see your set up when you get your cupboards squared away. For me it has been a big big help. You've got to have good lighting too. The lamps I have are made by Dazor. They cost a fortune new, but you can find them in the want ads. I got the one with the pedestal from an old church for $40. If you need a ballast, you can order them direct from Dazor for $18. I wouldn't be able to play if I had to pay retail.

This may be a help to someone. In the drawers I use a chopped up dish drain to keep the pliers in order. I use them for full sized files too. I don't want them crashing into each other. The bin boxes are categorized. One has paint brushes, one has tweezers, one has sanding sticks, etc,. These mongo desks have the slots for dividers. I got some balsa and cut it to size and it helps organize things. You will notice that I have put a small dot of paint on the jar lids, and have also written on the tops of things for ID purposes. This is necessary when looking down into a drawer. However, it is a small concession. Keeping everything out of sight and out of the way really pays big dividends for me. YMMV.

Holy crap batman, talk about organised!! Not going to show my wife this or she'll expect the same level of neatness. What's a modelling session if you can't fire of a few choice words when you can't find something, like the 10mm socket in the shed???

What's a modelling session if you can't fire of a few choice words when you can't find something, like the 10mm socket in the shed??? rolling I read somewhere, if your looking for a 10mm socket, your working on the wrong cars.. That is a pretty cool set up too Mark, i tidy between builds, otherwise i spend most of my time opening drawers looking for everything i need NOW !!! <iframe width="28.12000000000012" height="3.260000000000005" style="position: absolute; width: 28.12px; height: 3.26px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 14px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_5485801" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="28.12000000000012" height="3.260000000000005" style="position: absolute; width: 28.12px; height: 3.26px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1342px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_11643795" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="28.12000000000012" height="3.260000000000005" style="position: absolute; width: 28.12px; height: 3.26px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 14px; top: 103px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_45310692" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="28.12000000000012" height="3.260000000000005" style="position: absolute; width: 28.12px; height: 3.26px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1342px; top: 103px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_51213323" scrolling="no"></iframe>

I think that this is worth mentioning. I went to the auto parts store and got a cheapie set of floor mats. I think I found them online and had the store bring them in. Anyway, they had the pattern I wanted. I chopped them up and now the pattern serves as an organizer. I used to use this on top of my work table so nothing would roll away and stab me in the foot. Now that it is in a drawer it is more about order than safety, but I thought that someone might be able to use the information. Cheers guys.
