1966 VW Bug

It's one of my favorites, but I wish they'd rerelease the karman ghia.

Made a start tonight. So far I've just modified the front suspension but if it had springs instead of torsion bars it could be made to work. I started with the stock front suspension, and drilled each of the outer suspension pieces into the centre bars and then I cut the parts off on the molding where the 2 parts on the 1/1 would join. I cut down some sewing pins which were then put through the holes on the outer parts and glued only on the centre piece so the outer parts now move. Once I get to final assembly I will be gluing these parts to stop the movement but for now it wil make sure all 4 wheels touch the ground when finished.

Finished up the suspension mods tonight. I did the rear by drilling the centre of the torsion mounts and rounding off the square hole the peg went into, then used a pin glued only on the inside of the torsion bar so the torsion bars now have movement. I took a couple of pics to show how low it could go on the stock rims, but it wont be that low. The pic with the jacked up rear is the stance I'm going for.





I also modified the barrels on the engine by using 2 lower parts from one of my other kits, so I now have the fins top and bottom like on properly tuned dub motors. I've also made up some new driveshafts to convert the gearbox to independent spec but I haven't got a pic of them yet.

Looking real sweet and all the mods are turning this build into something not to miss. looking forward to seeing more of this.

Well after all the mods to the suspension, it turns out I now need to narrow the rear. Before I can do this I need to modify the wheels. I wanted to use the set in the first pic (not sure what they are from but I think it's a muscle car) as they resemble the classic vw brm drag wheel. I needed to narrow the fronts and widen the rears to get them to fit. With the rears I also needed the back face of the wheel deeper so it would fit the brakes without having to make spacers. I cut just the rim from 2 of the wheels and just the face from another pair. I then used just the rim on the face of the wheel to get my narrow front wheels, and the other pices to get my wider rears that will fit the brakes. I also cut down the wheels backs once I knew the sizes I would need. Next up will be narrowing the rear suspension and fitting the new driveshafts.

Lot of work but it will work out good.

I was hoping my vette kit would have been here by now so I can get the carb set up for the engine done today, but impatiently I'm still waiting for it. Instead I got on with the conversion to IRS on the gearbox. I used push/pop fasteners for the detail on the gearbox end, and some fujimi porsche axles from the spare box. I still need to shave a little from the wheel ends for a better fit. So now the final stance is set and a little less cartoonish looking. I also made a minor body mod by filling the mounts for the front indicators as I plan on moving them into the horn grilles. Finally I found some very 60's vw aftermarket style seats from an aoshima kit which are now in the stripper ready for the backs to be filled, and the basis for the roll cage which I think is from the linberg 40 ford police car but I will be adding rear bars and side bars to make a 6 point cage.

Well I sat down to do the shaping on the manifold and they broke apart. I've reglued and pinned them this time so will hopefully have a better update tomorrow
