Either for my Birthday or Christmas in 1968 my grandparents went over the top and gave me the Monogram Beer Wagon. Why "over the top"? Well it was at least a $5 kit and way more than the $1.50 to $3.00 kits I would normally have been given. I probably had the thing built in an hour. It was the only kit I ever got of the series and was my pride and joy for 6 years or so until it met the fate of most of my childhood builds. It then remained forgotten until a couple of years ago when I stumbled across the reissued Rommel's Rod in a local hobby shop. Once I bought that and opened the box I was hit with a wave of nostalgia for the poor old Beer Wagon and knew I had to get one. So I went shopping and... Here are some current listings. Each listed price could be $50 to $100 HIGHER if they decide to charge duty and taxes. Original issue in good shape be about $360 by the time I got it here (read the fine print Canadian dollars) A very battered original with contents of dubious condition. Be around $150 Even the 2016 issued is outrageous. At least $220 Now no matter how badly I wanted one these prices just were too high for me to feel good about paying them so I resigned my self to hoping it would get reissued or I found one at a flea market and they didn't know the value. Then a member of another forum posted one he picked up in a lot of kits and I expressed my excitement to see it. He sent me a message and asked if I wanted it and of course I said yes. He was supposed to find out how much shipping would be and I impatiently waited for a price so I could send him the cash. Five days later, instead of a price, he sends me a tracking number and says it is on it's way! A few days later he sent another message saying that now the tires were on their way as well. The tires arrived and then the kit arrived and I was like a little kid playing with the parts and making plans. Hoped to get started on it that weekend with no doubt it would take far longer than an hour to build this time. So pretty even on the sprues.

the tom daniel kit i'm looking for is the beach buggy to complete my 1/24 vw kits There are two based on the VW The Sand Crab which was the early release in '69 And the reworked molds for the 'Lil Van from '73 The older one is probably only around in an original issue but there is hope the molds for the van are still around and could be released by Monogram or Revell.

All cleaned up and ready for first base coats. Was a little flash, a couple of mold seams and scads of injector pin marks but all were easy to eliminate (well... reduce at any rate) Everything which won't be yellow, which is most actually, is base coated.

Barrels come up nice with a wash. Black bands painted sloppy to simulate the discolouring found on the real thing.

if you have some rust washes you can get your barrel banding even more realistic. the bands rust really quickly to the extent if you had one in bare metal at 9am it would be brown again by tea time. incidentally, my last name is the job title for the person that fitted those bands (budge) lol

Barrels look great, the wash worked a treat on all that hidden grain engraving. They did come out great. Wanted the bed and stakes to be a low gloss, slightly weathered, oak so gave a base coat of deck tan and a very light wash of Nulin oil Citadel paint. The very finely molded grain texture and spaces between the planks came out perfectly with a mildly worn but not abused look! The dash was smooth and I wanted wood grain there as well so did some wavy lines and swirls with some 250 grit sandpaper to give something for the wash to settle in.

That looks excellent! Very convincing wood finish, andyour idea to sand the dash for grain is genius!

Details painted and now each individual part will get a Nulin Oil wash. I am forgoing my normal overall coat of tinted future as I don't want to change the sheen of the black. Sort of hard to see in the picture but after wash. You can see the main difference in the chains and the highlighted bolts and such on the rear end. The dark grey of the seats now is more of a leather look black and the engine intake and headers are more defined.

The way the wood effects turned out is mind blowing Tony and as Bruce mentioned, the sanding effect is indeed a great idea for the grain effects. Looking forward to seeing the next update brother.

I can not stand model kit chrome. There is no chrome made, even full size, that is that bright so in scale it is way over the top. I am far too lazy to strip and paint so have two methods I use. One is hit all the chrome with Dullcoat and then overcoat with Future. This knocks that super ultra shiny fake stuff into something that looks real in scale. The other is what I did here. I just brush on some of my Nuln Oil shade and let it dry. Just have to make sure you keep things level and even. It leaves things about 60% as shiny but gives some depth and makes details pop even in the chrome parts. Spring on left and one of each wheel on right are treated. Rest are not.

Successful shiny yellow paint job!!!!! Testers small bottle flat yellow followed by a coat of Tamiya X-22 gloss and then finalized with a coat of Future. Couple of touch ups from some bleed through and all is perfect. Chassis Unglued mock up with BMF in place and basic interior assembled. About 85% of the way there

ah man, you're flying through this. i think i'll need to find a source for atlantis kits now. thanks, i think, lol This is a build from this spring but yes I did fly through it! The whole thing was done in about 20 hours over one long weekend but there are a few things that went into the "speed" of this. This is a kit I have had in the back of mind for the 20 years since I returned to the hobby. It has been in my top 5 Must Get kits for the 3 years since I found the Rommel's Rod kit. This means I was more eager to get started as soon as I got it in my grubby little hands than normal. This is a rare case of where I happened to have all the paints I needed on hand. Often what slows me down is I go to do something and don't have what I need and it get's put aside until can get it. This means some projects get delayed by weeks or even decades since they get forgotten on the selves of doom (yes plural). The low part count of these old kits mean assembly time is minimal. I could probably have quite nicely assembled this in an hour or so even if just slapped together. There was very little parts clean up need which really helped. And the big one is ... Other than eating and forum posting THIS IS ALL I DID THAT WEEKEND!

As this is the 1995 release I was not sure about the 30 year old decals. I was mildly optimistic when I saw them on the paper and they looked fully intact, then totally pessimistic when I slid them off the backing paper and they shriveled up and shrank to about a third of their size, then moderately optimistic when they smoothed out and expanded with many many wipes of a tissue, then mildly optimistic when I got all the water out and they still kept sliding around and silvering, then overjoyed when they reacted to some Micro Sol, settled down, bonded with no silvering and had a beautiful gloss finish.

I have used several different wood methods including pastels. In this case I wanted it to somewhat match the molded woodgrain so that meant having some texture.
