Hi again, I'm Greg and I'm new here. I haven't built anything with 4 wheels since the early 70's. I've decided on the '68 VW Beetle below... A friend here told me to choose a model and start a thread. So we're off!!! My plan is OOB, just glue and paint and see what happens! Please do let me know if everything is not ok (image sizes, proper section to post this, etc) -Greg

I've taken a liking to Stynylrez. Badger's somewhat new primer.
I'll be using acrylics mostly for colors.

Watching. It's a nice kit. Color scheme? Hi midnightprowler. Thanks for checking in. I plan on black .....because my best friend had one. Neither of us can recall the interior color, so I think I'll go with a deep tan. I always liked that color with black.

Cool, youve picked a great kit. I'm a vw fan so if you need any refernce, literally any areas you need pics of, i'll have them (nearly half a million vw pics, lol)

Last 20 yrs or so I've also taken quite a liking to VW's. We were watching Bates Motel last night, of of the kids drives a great-looking bright orange bug. If I weren't on a memory lane thing with my friend's black one, I think I'd be doing that. And thanks Joe, for supporting my color selection.

I think I'm satisfied with the engine compartment and thought I'd share my first progress pic. To remind the reader, this is my first model car in a little under 50 yrs, and I'm trying to take note of differences. First one I notice is this had taken me 10 days and I doubt that would have been the case when I was 13, or whatever. I spent a lot of time on the one-piece distributor. Looking at it under my Optivisor, I have no clue how you guys run ignition wires. We'll deal with that later, eh? Edit: I think my pics are too big. Is there a guideline here regarding maximum pixels on longest edge? Thanks!!

That is some nice weathering on the engine mate, your making great progress, no matter how long it takes.

I think it would be easier if it was done before you stuck it down but if its a good solid bond you should still be able to drill it out for the wires. There are also pre done distributors available from loads of places. I dont have any links for stores in the US though but somebody will

DeeCee, Joe, Stitchdup....
Thanks for the positive comments. I appreciate them.
Stitch, thanks for the info re ignition wires. I think I'll hold off for another build, that will be something completely different. I've never custom-wired any model engine and will be eager for advice when the time comes.
And thanks for confirming my pic size is ok.

So I have a question. Here is the underside of the chassis with the engine assy test-fitted. It's just black primer, but it's close enough to flat black to call done. My question is this; it looks fine and I don't want the chassis to look like it's been through a war, but nothing stands out. I've never been any good at breaking up black. What do you experts do? A grey wash? Drybrush? Some pastels? Blow on a flat clear coat and call it done? TIA for your input.

Heya Greg. Man the first thing I do is get reference photos of a daily driver of the undersides in this instance. After that piece of info is found then I’ve got an idea of what techniques I want to use as well as a direction to go in as well. Hope this helps.

Just spent some time searching online, Joe. Coming up with bunches of pics of chassis (what the heck is the plural of "chassis" anyway, Chassis again?) looking from top down on stripped cars, nothing looking up from the bottom.
Stitch said he has a gazillion bug pics, maybe he has something.
I'm really just looking for general ideas to break up lots of black. I think I'll blow on a satin coat and start experimenting. I can spray it flat again later.
Thanks for the ideas, Joe.

I would just dry brush some grime colours on it, light greys and light browns, or even just dirty up your fingers with dirt of the bench then just rub your hands over it. Between the grime and the oils from skin it'll soon look right, and if it doesn't look enough to you it just a case of handling it some more till your happy with it. I'll go through my pics and find some from the underside for you too though.

Les brings some good points up with rubbing your fingers across some of the surface details to highlight and provide different shades and texture to the chassis.

Thanks, Stitch. Great ideas.
Joe, didn't think of those search terms, I'll try that, thanks. Your bare finger idea is brilliant. For whatever reason, I'd have never thought of that.
Prowler, thanks for your comment.

Minor progress pic. Mounted the engine on the chassis. Here's the underside before I glue in the rear suspension. I don't know if I'm done with the weathering of the underside or not. I actually tried a combination of all of the ideas. Over-doing it, of course, I laid the matte clear on pretty heavy to tone it down. It ended up pretty subtle and that's ok. Thanks again for the good ideas. I might not be so afraid of large black surfaces in the future.

The weathering looks fine mate, not over done. The way i look at building a model, you would not have a nice shiny paint job, and a rusty bum and oil leaks everywhere. It all has to blend in perfectly.
