I saw this thread on another forum a couple of years back and thought it was a good reminder for me then as well as a fun subject to kick around. I know most of us have that huge green cutting mat and a little extra elbow room on our workbenches but...............how much of that space do we usually get to operate at? I had to catch myself the other day because I was running out of room on my work bench/ cutting mat working area. I stopped and took a good long look at it and found that I had a wood picket fence started for my auto garage build that's in progress, several PE sheets that were just laying around on the mat that I wasn't currently using and my display case that I keep any current build under to keep all dust accumulation on the build to an absolute minimum right smack dab in the middle of the mat. All of this left me with around a 6" x 18" work space. Lemme see if I can dig at least a partial picture up to illustrate my issue (I forgot to take "before" photos so I'm going to have to use what I can get here  )
You can see in the background where the fence is and the display case all of which took up a bunch of room. This was my total working area:

This is the what I should have for a working area (and I really try to keep it that way) but you know how that goes. One project gets on the bench and then a few parts , a few paint jars and a few tools later it gets right back to the crowded state again and before I know it I'm back to working in my little "boxed in " area on the bench. Funny how that stuff works aint it?
As fun as a thread like this is to read, it also serves as a reminder to me to be mindful of how much clutter I let stack up on my work bench.

Righto, I'll chime in and tell a story. I use a roll top desk, which is a decent size. I have a green cutting mat also, but I only have a small one, a bit larger than an A4 piece of paper. I try to work on the mat surface area only, helps to keep it neat and tidy. My desk has the 4 little boxes across the top, which make great storage for kits in progress, I keep paints in the left top draw. Files, clamps, tape, etc is all in the right top draw. I've tried to make it habit now to try and only work on one kit at a time. I also try to clean the flat surface of the bench after I finish a model or before I start a new one. *Clearly this picture was taken in winter, as I have two near completed kits ip the top, both awaiting warmer weather to paint. haha.  |

Thats a nice set ups Joe and Bruce.. I use ALL of my bench, because i'm usually cutting or fabrication stuff, i make a lot of mess.. This used to be the front porch of my house, but now filled in for better purposes.  No green mat, but i do now have green monster girls... way better in my opinion..   |

I seem to remember that thread years back, I think I commented on it back then too. My work space has changed over the years from a small deck 3x2 to a larger desk 5x2 1/2 to what I am using now. I use a old door 84" x 36" I put it on a frame and I have just as much space as I did to work on models that I did on the small desk. The good part is I can have more room for more kits I starte around me. I am a happy modeler.

Bruce: I like that roll top desk. That'd be a double edged sword for me as I'd get to make all the mess I wanted and just hide it. lolol

It also keeps my little boys hands off of things like scalpels. I hear you on the sharp tools subject. Every time our friends down the road visit with their 4 year old son (this kid is straight up supercharged man.) I've gotta shut the "room" off. |

man, you guys have the same sized desks as me but mine never look that clean. for the on tow build i have parts stacked on top of parts and still have no room. I end up doing most of my work in my hand then hope to fins a space to put it down, lol

I seem to be one of those people who have more tools than space to really use them all! (or ability to use them LOL!!) All my efforts to make more usable work space have simply now turned out to be more space for clutter, junk, etc.!! But I have 2 work areas in my hobby room so I can work on a couple of processes at one time. (that was my theory anyhow) -First my main bench  -Then my table for other build stuff  |

Well, that VW Beetle is a real nice kit!! I think maybe your not giving yourself enough credit here!?! You have to make a few mistakes to become even a fair modeler!
I am just getting going again here, I still have so much to
learn everyday in this hobby.

This is my model shop guys..its a 9x12 room that I built down in the basement...my wife calls it the cave. I had a lot of room down here,but when I get three or more builds going on I run out of space real quick...lolol    And this is my good buddy Charlie  |

I like your helper Charlie better than my cat I think!?!
Ambush (the cat) knocks my wheels and tires and just
about anything she fancies off the bench!
So after she plays with them for a while, do you think
she would put them back? Nooooooooooooooo!!!
I have to crawl around on the floor till I find them!
Maybe I should put stuff away when I'm not going to
be in there, huh!?!

Sharp, that is one heckuva workspace. I like the way the stash sort of blends right into the working space.
Charlie is a good helper I'm sure.

When my two dachshunds were alive (dubbed "Idiot 1" and "Idiot 2") there was never a dull moment. It's a wonder I got ANY modeling done....................but I do miss both of em. |

I envy all of you guys with real workspaces. I have a folding table I use to work on anywhere I find a spot, and a Stanley toolbox for my tools, etc.
My unbuilt kits sit in a large underbed drawer in the guest room, and my paint booth is in the basement with my tools and emergency supplies.
Needless to say, the parts monster loves me.
