Next up. Pretty much finished with the painting already. smileys-painting-009432_zps0b513ffb The color scheme will be pretty much by the factory book, except for the body being gunmetal instead of black. Bookoo detail on the engine, much of which will be hidden once it's assembled. I don't know why they bother, but it sure is cool! This will be my first Moebius kit. These guys are a real class act!

I'm optimistic. The body paint looks much better than it does in the photo.

I'm optimistic. The body paint looks much better than it does in the photo. Metallic is a hard type of paint to photograph until it's all polished, the sparkle plays up with the camera i find. If it's only near as good as the Caddie, it will shine mate.

Chassis is finished. Interior is finished except for dash, which I'll be working on tonight. It probably doesn't show up in the pics, but the quality of the molding is superior. Very clean and very defined. It really shows on things like the window trim...there's no guessing about where the edges are. Every small part has removable "handles" molded on to make painting easier. The attention to detail extends to the tires, which have no ridges or warts...perfectly smooth and nicely detailed tread.

Thanks, Dennis. Seems like I spend the most time on the areas that are seen the least. frantic I know exactly what you mean Sid. I do the same darn thing. Even when I try to do an what would be called an "easy build" it gets complicated and time consuming from detailing I try to do to make a better and more interesting build and much of it nobody will ever see. When I am doing the detailing I often think "why am I doing this?" The answer is I can't help myself. I'll be building along and see something and think "this would be better if I do this" and an easy build suddenly becomes harder, but I am always striving to learn more and get better so it pays off in the end. It shows in your work. You are a very very good model builder.

Well, it's another case of triumph and tragedy. I thought I was only hours away from finishing this. The BMF came out nice and the clear coat was looking good. Then I noticed a couple of places on the sides with some real noticeable sags where the clear coat had collected along the bottom edge. First I tried sanding and re-spraying with clear coat. It looked awful because the clear coat had also discolored in those places where it pooled. So I figured I'd spray more body color over those sections and then more clear coat, but what I got was an unintentional two-tone... Lesson learned. Rather than digging the same hole deeper I decided to strip it and start again. I think I at least figured out how to do a better job on the BMF than I had been, so it won't be as much of a nuisance the second time around. I've also decided to switch to using laquer rattle cans instead of an airbrush whenever possible...that's how this one was done. It's just so much faster and I get better results besides. Another lesson learned. Depending on how long it takes to strip this, I may start on another one and then come back to this.

Hopefully it will look just as good, or better the next time around. It finally ocurred to me to not clear coat the entire body at once, but to do the roof/trunk and then each side seperately. That way I can position it for drying so all surfaces are horizontal...no running. thinking-hard-smiley-emoticon

Sid...............been there- done that! I have an acronym that I use when things like this happen. I refer to it as an AFOG (Another Freekin' Opportunity for Growth). Hang in there buddy, things like this give us experience and makes us better modelers. Looking forward to more.................

I'm with you on that, Joe. Time for another experiment. Someone told me about this quite a while back, probably over on Jerry's. I don't rememeber who, so it may be someone here as well. Instead of trying to paint the lettering on the body, I'm going to try applying foil over those areas, painting over it, and then carefully scraping off the paint to expose the foil on just the lettering. The idea being that you can foil the lettering without having to try and cut aroun each letter. Here's the foil applyed on top of the primer. Sorry the pics aren't very good. The definition of the lettering through the foil is actually quite good. And with a few coats of laquer over it... If you look REALLY close you can make out the edges of the foil in some places. I'm not going to sweat it. That may vanish once the gloss goes on. I'll post pics of the results when I have some.

One trick in doing this mate, is wipe over the top of the letters with some thinner on a cotton tip, you will need to do it a few times, or wrap some very fine wet/dry around a flat piece of wood or an eraser, and wipe that over the letters. Next time, cut the foil as close to the exact size of the emblem, this will tidy up any edges.
I like the way your experimenting , onwards and upwards mate. Nice work !!

First I tried scraping off the paint with various implements. It worked OK, but is tricky...easy to tear the foil. Using thinner sounds like a much better way to go. I'll try that today. Despite having to re-do some stuff, I'm feeling pretty good about this build.

Well, I just couldn't make it work. Oh well, no biggy. I've removed the foil and repainted, and will commence with re-doing the trim. I may give the lettering trick another try some other time.

Shame it didnt work out for you. I have had really good success with polishing lettering out lightly with some cut and polish after each coat as the paint then doesnt build up and it polishes the bmf at the same time.
