Well gang, after a LONG, tough week at work, I got home last night to experience some crazy, frightful power surges. The furnace was trying to turn on by itself, the TV popped off, shoot, we had breakers popping like crazy at the panel box. To the point, I literally could not keep up re-setting them! Frustrated, I went out back to see if the power line, or outside box and wires were falling down or what. While I was in the backyard, I noticed smoke from the backyard 2 houses down from ours. Being in an arm sling still, I couldn't climb the fence high enough to see over, so I pulled a couple pallets over and stepped up, only to find that neighbors sun room was starting to go up in flames!!!
I jumped down and tore through the house, yelling at my wife to call the fire department NOW!!!! I ran out the front and across the yards to this neighbor Bella, she is a small old lady, very kind, and noticing no cars in the driveway, it looked like she was not home. At this time, the fire was really starting to get out of control in her back yard. The sun room being attached to the rear of home, the house was quickly filling up with smoke. Another neighbor ran to me, and we went to see if the front door was open, it was, and we made it about 4 or 5 steps in, calling out for anyone, but soon we were becoming overcome by the smoke and had to run back out.
By this time, a police car had arrived, and he was blocking the entrance road for the fire trucks that were on the way. I ran back over towards our house, meeting Joana, the neighbor between our house and the fire. She started to call Bella to find out where she was. This is where I noticed the fire was really blazing, and with all our houses close together, the fire was starting to spread to Joana's backyard fence, and right up to her shed. I really don't remember doing it, but I tore off my arm sling, and somehow or another got the garden hose laying in front of Joana's house, trying to get it attached to the outside water faucet, I just had no strength in my arm to twist it on. The man that ran inside with me earlier came running over, and I told him to get this thing attached, my arm was not letting me do it. I then grabbed the rest of the hose and ran between the houses. The fire was raging to my left, as I was putting out the grass to my right, and hosing down the roof and sides of the shed. Finally the fire trucks began to pull in and once they got a hose back to me, and they started to work knocking down the blazing sun room, I pulled back to get out of the way.
After a few hours, the house was saved - a lot of smoke damage, and ceiling damage, BUT, it should be repairable. I was rolling up the hose I had, and my wife brought me my arm sling, and that's when assistant fire chief Reese came up to me to ask what we knew. About an hour later, Huff, he was the leader of one of the engines, came over to our porch where I was just chilling out, staying out of the way, and he told me that what I did probably prevented the house from completely burning down, with us finding the fire and calling so quick.
He also told me that by using the garden hose, and putting out the grass fire and hosing down the roof of the shed most certainly contained the fire to just the one home. Then he tells me he was going to put in the report that I should be brought to city hall to receive a honorary citizen's award for saving the neighbors shed, and probably her home. I told Huff that was not needed, I only did what anybody would have done, but who knows, maybe I will get embarrassed with a commendation of sorts or something, LOL
Honestly, I am just glad no people or animals were hurt, and Bella's house was saved, along with Joana's and really , ours as well, as we are next to Joana's home.
