Does anyone here 3d print their own parts? If so where do you find print files at or are you designing your own?

i have lots of vw stuff (more modern fwd engines coming soon)and a few v8s. mostly i rent out time on my printer if its full kits and then i fill the gaps on the print plate with small parts related to the kits or dio parts. Its not really a business, more sharing the equipment and making it available to folk tat dont have one. files i get from cults mostly and generally i use the larger engine files but scaled down as it loses some of the blockiness of the parts and is more likely to give good looking round parts. i tend to stick to a few parts designers as i know their files work. on cults that would be walidkhier for vw campers and trailers. his files are free and he is the original designer of the printed wire wheels for the revell xke, andrei bezrodney for full kits of cars and pick ups that have never been kitted before, rcgang for fwd vw engines, mcs design for a variety of parts, nahunel customs for pre war usa bodies and various custom parts and slowlys models for custom parts. theres others i use too but those i use the most. if searching cults i usually search by parts but its often worth searching by scale too as that will bring up designs in other languages too. there are other 3d sites too but i like cults due to its ease of use. i dont do designs myself though, when i learned 3d drawing we did it by pencil and ruler, lol

Thank you for the info. Eventually I'd like to find some files for a vw baja, that's my ultimate goal anyways...lol other then that I'm looking for 4x4 related parts. I'll definitely check out the cults site and see what I can find. Thanks again for the info.

Thanks again for the info. there is a gaja transkit for the newest revell bug that fits the tamiya bug too. its available in wide and narrow eye from texas 3d. he doesn't sell the files but its worth the money

it looks like a good machine but before you buy a printer be sure your computer has at least an 8 gig processor but preferably more as the slicer needed to prepare the files uses a lot of ram. you'll need a cure station for resin too but you can usually get a deal buying both together. get the biggest cure station you can if you plan to do bodies. it needs a warm constant temp to or the print falls of the print plate. and get a swear jar cos theres going to be a lot of that. resin printing is more suited to modelling than fdm just due to the finish but fdm is much tougher. i'm not an expert, if something goes wrong with mine i struggle to work that out, lol

I looked at 3d printers a year or so ago but now the prices have come down pretty good. Does the process with the resin or the cleaning smell very much?

Does the process with the resin or the cleaning smell very much? i dont think so but i've been a smoker for years so i'm not the best judge. i use the resin thats washed with ipa but waterwashable is available too. also most curing stations have a wash feature too so i tend to dunk prints in used ipa and shoogle it about gently, then put it in the wash tank on the machine for 15 mins. this keeps the ipa in the machine good for longer but even when its too contanimated to clean or rinse prints it can be used to strip bad paint. i'm told the waterwashable smells less however i found it more prone to distortion or shrinking but that could just be the brand i used. it is a big learning curve getting going and frustrating. i only got my small printer to work properly after getting the big one. some people swear by expensive branded resin but i honestlt dont see much difference between them and i've had more sucessful prints with cheap resin than with brand names. i'm 2 years into it and honestly a lot of the time its down to luck. i know how to change the settings but i dont know why would be the best way of putting it. i dont regret getting them though, its like having a hobby shop on the bench and everything is next day delivery. not as fast as startrek but it probably wont be too long, lol

another thing that might be surprising is how much you can get from a bottle of resin. all the grey bits in this pic were one bottle, and it doesn't include the chevy service truck that came out of the same bottle. and this another bonus is once you own the file you can print as many as you like so each one becomes cheaper. with things like engines that can be a big saving. for me the variety was a big draw too. theres kits of stuff nobody would ever do in plastic such as the 37 lincoln i recently printed and the 35 thats on now. i did find the limit of my slicer program though, it doesn't like more than 110 items at once. but i've also fought the thing until i'm near crying and been ready to smash it but right now its going good soi'll print as much as i can while its going good. now do i print a chevy crew cab or an audi sedan next?

I'm still looking at all the models, prices, and ease of use. I can't keep it in the garage due to the weather and I'm afraid it may stick up the house if I run it indoors.

yes, but i dunk it in old ipa before i put it in the wash tank. it gets the worst of the excess off and makes it last longer. even the stuff thats too dirty for dunking can be used to strip paint too. i rinse it in water after the alcohol cleaning is done too just to get any last loose bits and then its ready to use once it dries. i do my cleaning at the kitchn sink but i plug the sink to catch any mess, and clean it properly after but thats just because i dont have another sink. i do run my extractor fan a few times while the printer is running and in summer i'll open the window if its warm enough. honestly after buying them the biggest cost for me is heating but i'm on the scottish islands. the bottle of resin i'm using now is 3kg but usually they are 1kg. i've printed 12 sets of wheels, probably enugh parts for 3 lincolns, lots of detail parts, and have a 35 ford on now. i expect to get 3 more kits out of this bottle and more wheels and engines before opening another bottle. this is a bigger bottle though but as a guide i would expect 2 kits, 4 engines and a lot of wheels out of a normal bottle but the one lot of files i use could get 5 kits from a bottle.

the slicer prepares the 3d file for printing. it comes as a solid 3d drawing and the slicer turns it into 2d layers so it can print them and stack them to create the print. its a bit like slicing a turkey and putting it back together. but the slicer is also where you entre the settings for your printer though once you have them set you can almost forget about them unless you want to print clear parts but i would only do small parts if you do as large parts tend to look bad but there are some processing tricks to improve small parts, but the settings are all different. this is how the printer knows how fast to lift or lower and how long to put the light on. you dont need to use the manufacturer slicer either, i hated the look of anycubics enough that i'm using the free lychee slicer. its not any better, it just looks nicer.

i started printing a 35 ford at 1pm yesterday. it finished at 11.30am this morning and was cleaned and cured by 1pm. its a test print so i could check the scale and since it turned out a touch small, i did a very quick build to show what to expect from a 3d print. the only prep it got was one quick blast of filler primer on the body and a rub with a tamiya 600, followed by a 1500 sponge, nothing else. the rest all got one blast normal primer and by 4pm it was all painted, and only needing glass. i'll do a couple hours detail painting in the morning then post pics.

i use cults, theres loads of free files. if you look for andrei bezrodney, he has a free full kit of a jeep thats nice. the suspension is toyish and thers no engine but it prints nice and is good for practise. the civic iceman sold as his first kit is also there free. there is a box at the top of the page on cults to only show free files. i find it works better scaling down than up so searching by scale can bring up some surprises. rc wheels alway have a hole in the hub so i ignore them

The only thing that concerns me at this point is the smell, the potential for a mess in the bedroom while cleaning up, and getting the wife's ok to even use it in the house. If I put it in the garage where my model area is that would make it a summertime printer only. Not sure if having a part time printer is worth it. Maybe I'll wait til 2025 to see if the Elegoo Saturn 5 Altra comes out.

I've been doing my research and here's what I've come up with that would need to be bought along with the 3d printer of your choosing. 3d printer of your liking Slicer (software to prepare .stl file) Resin of your liking 99% IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol for Cleaning) UV Light Box (Used to cure your print) FEP film Plastic pan for cleaning build plate If I've left something out please enlighten me.
