A couple of years back on mcm a builder called Claude Thibodeau shared a custom new beetle van he had built. The idea has sorta festered until a couple of days ago when the alpine hit a pause (i like to do foil in the sunshine)so it hit the bench. I'm using the rear roof from a revell pt cruiser snap kit and the rest is mostly tamiya new beetle. Now in the vw tuner scene theres a custom style called oem+ and means all the parts come from mostly higher end vw group cars, though some ferrari and mercedes wheels are ok, so thats the style this will be getting. To acheive this i have removed the rear seat from an audi e-tron and used 3d printed seats from blackbox for the fronts. The wheels will be resin bentley continentals. at the moment i'm filing the body to match the bug as the cruiser is much rounder than the bug and this has to look unmodified. The engine is a 3d printed vw r32 vr6 and i might canabalise a fujimi kit to get the 4x4 parts. i want this to appear stockish when its finished as you can see its very blobular till but the plastic is pretty thick so i can file it down to shape. it should match the following part when done i had to move the rear lights further out but they'll still need the edge trimmed to clear the body

There is some awesome cut and shut work going on here and it has a bit of a modern SUV/ people mover feel about it!

A little more progress. i trimmed one edge of the chassis to clear the engine and i've been carefully trimming the sides of the interior tub as i think i can make the trim line up to the seats. this means the front seats will be from the audi now too I like the way you're going about this Les and it looks like everything is lining up well so far. Cool frickin' project buddy.

Wow! What a crazy cool idea. I love the look of this. It has a distinctive European look. I know its already European, but the looks many of the cars from that region have is unique in the world and this fits perfect. Can't wait to see more of this.

Wow! This is such a cool concept, and it looks amazing to boot! I love the OEM+ look. I also love the attention to detail that VW guys have. Bentley wheels is also a great touch.

Cheers guys, because of the way i cut the cruiser roof away it left me enough to do a cruiser pick up to build another time

This looks to be coming together pretty seamless Les. So far you've got allot of things in check and the details are really set this one off when it's all said and done.

I was hoping to get some primer on this today but its too cold to open the window and its blowing straight at it. So i think due to the weather i'l pull out something else thats been stalled for a long time for no real reason

got some primer on so i can start on the filler now. you can see how i;ve reshaped the rear better now. the roof edges were rounder but the bug is quite square. luckily revell used thick plastic on the cruiser

Looking like you're not going to have to do just a whole lot of filling and sanding on this one Les and I do see how you've reshaped the rear some in that last photo. Lookin' good so far buddy!!
