Well I thought I would share another set of projects that have kept me busy and out of trouble.
I took up cycling a few years ago, after having been estranged from it for 30+ years. Just like modelling.
After going through lots of bikes from cruisers to carbon, I now have figured out what works for me.
This is my 1985 Miyata 1000. This is basically the top of the line that Japan had to offer, the Holy Grail of touring bikes, but I didn't want to do it stock.
I knew I wanted to start with this frame because of the tubing, the geometry, the brazed on lugs for racks, etc.
but I wanted to upgrade from the downtube shifters and triple crankset. I wanted to do this in the style of a Randonneur bike
instead of a full on touring rig. Basically, going briskly for long distances. I don't really need the rear rack for my application, but
that's ok. It does go with the bike and better on the bike than in a closet somewhere.
This is the ad I saw on Ebay.
I asked the guy if he would sell me just the frame and rack and he agreed. He was a wheeler dealer so he knew he would sell the components easily.
The rear wheel itself is pretty cool. It is a 40 spoke wheel instead of 36, designed to haul heavy loads. Anyway, he agreed and I was glad.
I had just built a 1984 Fuji del Rey. This was such a cool bike. All original except I upgraded the brakes and shifters to the top of the line of the period.
I loved riding it, however the shifting and brakes just slapped you in the face that it was a 30 year old bike.
So gorgeous. It was "Oak Green", basically a dark green with gold pinstripes, accents, cogs and wheels. Sold it to a Fuji collector to hang on his wall. It went to a good home.
What I'm getting at is I knew I wanted an old bike, but a retro mod if you will. So I cold set the frame to accept modern drivetrain. I'll explain later.
I lucked out in that one of the best wheel builders around is semi local and I had him built me a set of 32 spoke wheels using the Rolls Royce of hubs for the rear wheel and a generator hub for the front wheel.
Bulletproof. Installed a modern drivetrain, small rack and bag for the front, and a lighting system and a usb charging port to charge my phone. You can see that under the top tube. I have a small JBL wireless
speaker and now I just throw my food, phone, etc in the bag and I can be gone listening to albums for hours. The modern "brifters" (integrated brake and shift levers) give real brake performance and instantaneous shifts.
I love this thing. It's like a luxury limo. Anyway here is the finished article.
