Ok, since I started on the 53 Corvette, during my research I discovered that 55 was the first year a V8 was offered, and the first year a choice of colors was offered too. I tried to do my selection in an "unusual" manner. This is the kit I started with. First thing I notice is poor fit. Oh well. This gives me an excuse to use my new super duper Friedrich (Word Censored By Forum Administrator) files. I love these files. Makes me feel like I know what I'm doing. Better.

Here is the reference photo for the generator. Some had black front and rear plates, but for more visual interest, I chose aluminum front and rear. What I tried to do here was to paint the channels of the pulley silver because that's where the belts run, and no paint would be there. Meh. Ok, I guess. Hard to do. Had to try though didn't I? Tried to replicate the details.

Another batch of chassis stuff painted. My reference photos showed that the underside of the Corvettes were a tan-ish, yellow-ish fiberglass. Here I used Testors Tan acrylic over white styrene for the 53 kit and over grey styrene for the 55 kit. The tan over white looks closer to the reference photos. I stripped the kit chrome from the engine goodies and used Alclad II gloss black base in prep for the ALC-107 chrome. It goes on nice and thin and details remain crisp.

Since I have two models going, with all the requisite bits everywhere, I needed to take some time and make more supplies. The alligator clips were less than $3 for a bag of 20, and the sticks were bamboo skewers from the grocery store. Chopped the skewers in half and then get to clamping. After a while I have more supplies at the ready. This was another super deal. Four eye dropper bottles (one clear one, not pictured), for about $7. This allows me to get separate the chemicals for safety and organization.

On to the interior. For the dashboard I started with thinned Testors black and then applied Model Master Silver Chrome Trim with a sharpened toothpick for the gauge surrounds. Was getting lightheaded from holding my breath. Seats and door panels painted. The completed interior. I am pleased with the result. Here is the reference photo. I like all the contrasting colors. And here is mine from a similar angle. I am happy with that.

Now for this model, as opposed to the 53 Corvette I have in process, I wanted to try and do whitewalls. I started by painting on Humbrol Maskol, a paintable latex. I like this product. Shot the tires with Tamiya X2 white, then peeled off the mask. Clean up any ragged edges with a #11 blade. I think they turned out pretty good. If you look closely at the tire on the far right you can see that is the weak link. I tried to brush paint on the whitewall. Too blobby and inconsistent. "If you want good results, you have to put in the work." I said to myself. The airbrush did a much more even job of the paint application. In this case the steel wheels are painted body color. Harvest Gold. I got the Harvest gold, Woodland Green lacquer, and grey primer from MCW- Model Car World. Mike is a nice guy and I really like the product. Here are the painted wheels/wheelcovers, followed by the assembled wheels. I am very pleased with the results.

Somewhere along the line, I either lost the drag link while cutting up the sprue trees, or the kit didn't come with one. I said, "Once the model is in the case no one will ever know." But I would know. That simply won't do. And since my whole impetus is to be a modeller, not merely an assembler, I decided to try and replicate one. I started with some rod and two slices of tubing. Put a small blob of sprue goo (melted sprue in Tamiya glue), on the donuts to close them. Then with some small bits and pieces, and some shaping I ended up with a very workable piece. I am pleased with the result. The piece in situ. The chassis is Tamiya X18 Semi flat shot from the airbrush. The drag link is X18 brushed on. Way too shiny. Another lesson learned. I have since gone over it with XF1 flat black, but it is still has more gloss than the airbrushed paint. I'll know for next time.

This is the reference photo for the chassis. The tires sit nicely in the arches. This is a pic of the 53, but the 55 looks exactly the same. Looks like a dune buggy. This won't do. I will have to deal with this. That's all for now. Thanks for looking.

This is looking fantastic, I like your attention to detail.
If you want to simulate pulley channels, try Graphite Powder(the same gear you use for locks, hinges, etc.) You'll need a small touch up stick (looks like a miniature cotton tip).

Thanks Bruce.
I actually have some of that. I will have to see what I can do with it.
Thanks for the tip.

Some progress: So as with the 53 Corvette, I decided to move the spindles and relocate them to get the 3/32" I needed. I used my super duper Tamiya photoetch saw for this task. It is insane what this saw will do. It mics out at .005", and as you can see, makes a super clean cut. This is the result. Again, I used some tubing to make spacers to achieve the 3/32" drop. Everything in situ, and putting the wheels back on. Here is the result. Just placed there for now. It will be dead level when I am done. Thanks for looking.

Some progress: It's really weird working on two cars that are so similar. I am getting deja vu. Anyway, on to the exhaust. Here is the reference photo. Here are the exhaust tips in the kit. No thank you. Drill through the valence. Some tubing and some miter box action. I am pleased with this result.
