Well, out of the frying pan and into the fire with this one. This next project is going to be the AMT 1967 Shelby GT350 Mustang. I will be painting this in Ford Wimbledon White (Gravity Colors paint) with Blue Stripes from a decal set from "Firebird Decals." This kit is certainly not like the recent Tamiya kits I have been building, and while looking over the parts, I noticed immediately that there was plenty of flash and overall poor fit which will need to be finessed and worked to make the model less toy-like. In fact one of the pics below shows the poor fit of the front clip and grill AFTER almost two hours of sanding and adjusting. Also, as with many domestic kits, the tires are lacking and I expect the ride height to be part of the upcoming problems. Such is the challenge. I will be sourcing better tires and improving the kit wherever possible. Mustangs are my favorite musclecar and I have wanted one of these for my display for a while. So, let's get started.

Man there are fit issues all over that kit. Need another one for parts Gil? I’ve got an incomplete kit I can send you.

WOW that is a bad way to start a build mate.

Unfortunately so many of these older re-issue kits have this problem.

Yep, and that is just the beginning. You are right, Joe. Seems almost every body part fits poorly; rear valence, trunk, hood. I will let you know if I need anything from that kit. So far I have the front and back clips attached and sanded. Now for some filler. Updates to follow.

I'm sure you're going to do a bang up job on this one Gil.

Issues first seen with the body have been less traumatizing than anticipated. With some forced fitting and some superglue the body filler was minimized. The trunk lid was the worst fitting part and some of the panel gaps are large but I tried to narrow them a bit. I also drilled and opened up the molded in door handles and re-scribed panel lines that were lost to sanding, and deepened the edges to the trim to make foiling easier. Finally I have prime, tweaked it some more, and re-primed. I think it nearly ready for color or lack of color (white). Here are the pics of the progress:

Here is a quick update on the Shelby; The "Wimbledon White" is painted and polished, and the bare metal foil trim was applied. The black paint was applied to the interior of the body, engine compartment, grills, and hollow areas of the scoops since they were solid pieces. I am impressed with the level of detail in this old molding. It seems AMT got the look of the front end on this one, unlike some of the Revell offerings, of older Mustangs.

Progress on this is looking really good Gil. These older molds do indeed have their fair share of fit issues but I think AMT gets an undeserved bad rap sometimes because they really went to some great lengths with alot of their kits in terms of details.

Just a little bump in the road.....I started to put the stripes on the hood and after adding a little solvent, it caused the color to become splotchy. These are coated inkjet decals so that would explain it. The instructions say that solvents can be used. So, I ordered an alps printed set from Kieth Marks. These are pricey but better. They should arrive shortly.

Man I hate it when that kind of stuff happens. Looking forward to the progress when you get those Keith Marks cals in.

Ok, just because I haven't posted recently doesn't mean I have been idle. I have since received the new decals from "Kieth Marks." I am not entirely happy with them considering the price since there were some small imperfections. I made due and semi satisfied with the results.(I was able to mix some craft paint to match the color in an attempt to hide some of the blemishes). The sheet does include some extras that are useful though. Below is the nearly finished body. I have installed the glass and I have to say that it was one of the easiest glass installations I have ever done. Who would have thought that when I started this build? I also have nearly finished the chassis and suspension parts and detailed them with some factory markings and overspray. That is the extent of the detailing though, no brake or fuel lines will be added.

Nice job on the bodywork, love these in white with the blue stripes !
Looks like the chassis is coming along well too. I've got a revell mustang GT somewhere, I might just make a start on it after watching yours !

Such a good job on that paint and decaling Gil. Despite your difficulties with the cals it looks as though you whipped everything into shape. I hear you though.....for the money we spend on this stuff you'd think we'd get a good product out of it. That has been the case on multiple occasions for me.

The 289 HIPO engine is complete. I added the following: a breather cap, dipstick, ignition wires, heater hose, fuel line, replaced the alternator with a parts box example with bracket, and scratchbuilt a power steering pump with added pulleys, bracket and belt. I also planned to add an oil filter but it seems that there is no room bc the motor mounts will be in the way so I nixed that. Curiously, there is no fan shroud in this kit. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I simulated the air filter element by using athletic wrapping tape and lightly going over it with a graphite pencil for the metal mesh, and then edging it with an orange sharpie marker. It was an easy solution.

Here is the final update before the reveal. I have finished the interior and show the modifications to the inner wheels to accommodate the f70-15 tires and decals I obtained from Fireball Modelworks. These tires are way better than the junk tires included in the kit. I also added the seat belt harnesses that hang from the roll cage in the interior. The trim was done with a combination of metal foil, molotow pen, and metalyzer paints.
These are the tires from Fireball. The original tires on these cars are the E70-15's but the F70's are close enough You can see the tire width difference between these and the kit tires. (kit tires are on the left) Below you can see the sidewall differences as well as the modifications I had to do to accommodate the thinner tire. I ground down the extra plastic on the inside of the inner wheel after gluing the middle inserts. The one on the left is the finished example. As you can see I test fitted the wheel into the tire. Much better.
And now the finished product with the "Good Year Speedway" decals. I am a believer that the right tires and ride height on a car model can make or break a build.

I am calling this DONE! It wasn't without its problems when it came to final assembly and ride height, as predicted. Firstly, whilst mating the body and chassis certain parts that are supposed to be installed prior to assembly predictably presented a fitment issue (front shock/springs and radiator support). I got it to fit together after removing the shocks and then gluing the frame together. Additionally, the front fan assembly extended too far forward and dislodged the radiator support. Plus, I later found that one of the engine mounts, alternator, and right exhaust manifold came unattached. To remedy this I had to remove the fan while everything was together. I then modified it to fit closer to the engine. Once this was done I fixed all of the aforementioned. However, my trials had just begun. When I installed the tires to check the ride height one of the corners floated at least a 1/4" above the table. It appeared the rear wheels were too deeply set and not centered in the wheel wells. More surgery. To rectify this I needed to remove the whole rear assembly and bend the leaf springs to help raise the ride height. I also had to relocate one of them more toward the rear to center the wheel. Not fun, but I overcame. Below is the result and I think the new tires and ride height makes all the difference in this kit. The rest of the finished pics will be shown in a new "on the road" thread." Thanks for looking.
