While I've been waiting for decent weather to paint the heb I've also been working on this. Its meant to use a vw vanagon kit for the donor but I dont want to sacrafice the one i have left as they seem to have doubled in value recently. Instead I'm using a tamiya porsche 959 that has a squashed roof. For the front suspension I like the narrowed look used on beetles so everything forward of the floorpan has been cut off and wont be used, It was a bit of a mess anyway so losing it isn't an issue. I have started to scratchbuild a front section to mount the revell 1/25 beetle front suspension which saves me having to narrow a tamiys one. At the rear I have again removed everything from the rear seat back. I will be scratchbuilding a beetle style rear suspension since it is pretty simple to make and theres no chance of any kit parts fitting. The front hood has been cut open so I will have to scratch something custom under there, so for inspiration I am using a mk3 golf on a beetle floorpan that was done over here a few years ago www.superstreetonline.com/features/eurp-1202-1992-vw-golf/ I am using bigger wheels on this one, the fronts are 18 x 9 and the rears were going to be 20s but they were far too wide to work so I had to go for 22s instead. I'm planning on using as much of th stock interior as possible but the rear seat area is gong to need a lot of work to get the wheels in. It will be riding on scratchbuilt air suspension which will be mounted up front with the fuel tank I thought i had more recent pics but all thats left of the supplied chassis is the middle bit and the 2 squares in front of the rear wheels so I have something to line up the rest

I love how these look when they are all tricked out. Looks like you have your work cut out for you on that chassis. This is gonna look sick when done with those huge wheels on it.

As I was aying before there isn't much left of the chassis. I am currently working on the front end using a front axle from a 1/25 revell bug kit. I used it to save me having to cut down and narrow the tamiya axle and still have the narrowed front end look that is so popular in the vw scene. For the rear I will be scratchbuilding the suspension as nothing from any of my vw kits will fit (who would have expected that, lol) I have also cut open the hood as my plan involves a fully scratchbuilt under hood area. I have built up a aircooled style framehead to mount the axle to, and this will eventually be home to an air tank and pumps along with the fuel tank and some other bits yet to be decided. At the rear the trunk was already open but to make room for the wheels i had to grind down a lot of extra resin as the body is quite thick. As you can see the engine is just a little too long to fit but I plan to cut away everything under the bumper which should give me the space i need and expose the turbos like they seem to like doing on supercars And heres the engine ready for wiring. The axles will be getting cut off later so they aren't painted yet. I thought it bext to leave them until after the suspension is done so i have a good reference point for the torsion bars I have picked out the porsche writing on the heads in red but it wont be seen once the car is together

Interesting project. I didn't know anyone made a 412. I once bought one in the mid '70s just for the pan cake fan, twin port head engine. I couldn't afford to rebuild the Porsche quad-cam 1600 in my 1 0f 13 Elva Porsche. Those engines go for at least $200,000 now. Surprisingly, by the mid 70s we could match the power of the quad-cam with the twin port heads of the 412 and ram air cooling and much more.

A little more progress this afternoon. I've done a little more on the front underhood area but there lots more to be done here. The tube are a bit narrower than the underhood but I have a plan to fix that and add more detail at the same time While that was setting up so I could do more work I start modifying the front seats. The airtrax seats while very nice just didn't really fit the vibe of the build. I had it sat next one of the porsche seats and noticed the centre would fit them so I started cutting out the centre from the porsche seat, then shaped the 412 seat centre to fit in the gaps. After a little filler on the edges they should blend into the mostly stock looking interior. And heres the front stance, the rear will be a little higher for a slight rake but to get the camber on them i will have to sand the bottom of the tyres to suit as since their resin my usual method of melting the tyres on a frying pan wont work
