Hey guys, just a little note to say to be safe when your building and painting. I've ended up in hospital 3 times over the last 8 months with breathing difficulties. I've been a smoker for 25 years and assumed it was just down to that but after seeing the specialist today he thinks my lungs are more damaged than they should be from just smoking. He thinks all the dust and paint is a large part of it, especially as i spent a few years working in a bodyshop with no dust masks or any sort of safety equipment. I can tell you its not nice when you cant catch a breath so make sure you have a good quality dust mask when your doing any sanding or painting as that dust is worse for you than smoking! Believe it or not i actually feel lucky its just emphysema and not something worse, some lifestyle changes (much less junk food and more excercise) should improve things a lot for me but remember to wear a good mask, those disposable things aren't really that good, get one with replacable filters instead and you can see just how much crap your stopping from getting in your lungs

Sorry to hear about your health troubles, and thanks for posting the safety message. We need to be reminded that we are dealing with some nasty stuff at times and need to act appropriately. If not for ourselves, then for those that love, and or count on us.

Well said gents. We deal with stuff that can literally kill us, so use whatever safety measures available so we can keep doing what we love.

Never really thought about it, but you're absolutely right. It only takes 5 seconds to put a mask on.

If this helps anyone, this is the respirator I use. Cheers.

I've got a similar one but with hard shell filters, works pretty good for fumes and dust and the seal around my face is great, unlike the disposable things that just seem to leave gaps around my nose which defeats having a mask on. I wonder what my neighbours think seeing me walk around my house with this on, lol

I once was trimming a small part with my hobby knife with a new blade and the knife slipped from my fingers and the blade nicked my thumb. The knife hit my leg and fell on the top of my shoe and rolled on the floor. I went to get a bandage for my thumb and when I got to the bathroom, my right leg was completely soaked with blood. I pulled down my jeans and the knife had gone into my leg about 1/4 inch before falling to the floor. I called my wife as I started putting pressure on my wound to stop the bleeding. She got me several paper towels at my request and called for an ambulance. By the time the ambulance arrived, the bleeding had stopped and the Paramedic said I did the right thing by sitting down and applying pressure to the wound. I wasn't charged for the ambulance visit since they did nothing. I shut down the bench for the day and sat on the couch watching TV and drinking a bottle of water for the rest of the afternoon. My first aid training worked for the first time ever!
