I've had the kits for this build stashed away for a loooong time. Since the end of the 3rd anniversary build and in the lead up to the announcement of next years build list, I wanted something that I could start that wasn't likely to come up as a monthly build and something I could set aside to do the monthly builds. So this is what I'm aiming for. Excuse the quality of the pic but you get the idea. Not sure about the load, finding something in 1:25 might be the issues, Land Rover perhaps?? These will be the kits used. Every year at the Wagga Model show they have a car, truck and military muster where they pick a theme for the category which changes each year. 2020 for trucks is red (pretty droll) and the military is the Australian Military. So if I have this done I'll take it down and enter it. The larger scale always gets up the noses of the 1:35 purists. Apparently there is a complete truck and trailer preserved at the Bandiana Military Base museum near Albury/Wodonga, so a road trip may be in order. ( I was born in Albury when Dad was stationed there when he back from Vietnam). Sourcing the correct colour may be the issue, a lot of the U.S and U.K olive drabs aren't quite right. Weathering may be needed to solve the problem.

Thanks guys. The kit and truck differ a bit with front axle and therefore guard positions but is shouldn't be too difficult. The devil will be in the details I think.

Ok so the cutting and shutting has started. Engine has been assembled as per kit instructions. This kit suffers from the usual AMT mold lines, ejector pin marks and some less than perfectly cast pieces but isn't too bad. I swapped out the kit gearbox which was a Spicer 16 speed for the Allison auto that these had for army use.The sump has been put on in the reversed position to clear the set back axle (I hope). I've done a little plumbing on the motor to try and give it a bit more detail. Might try some wiring to the starter and alternator etc. I'll run fuel lines to & from the tanks, air lines back to air tanks etc and leads into the back of the battery box. I think I'll have to do this seeing it's all 1 colour with nothing to distract the eye. The chassis rails have been shortened by 30mm- roughly the sleeper width, to get the approximate wheel base. I can't find measurements for this so it's all pretty much by eye so far. Once I start getting a few sub assemblies together I'll be able to scale things out a bit better.

Thanks gents. Chassis is together. After cutting the end off the chassis I was thinking too far ahead and forgot to move the cross member 2nd from the left forward to suit the new rear axles position. Luckily the glue was still soft enough to let me ease it forward into the right spot. The pencil mark in this shot shows where the front axle should mount and how far back I've moved it - approx 16mm. On the rear suspension, the 1:1 doesn't have those little rectangular block on the top of the bush housing so I'll cut them off and make up some pins like the real thing. Here I have drilled the axle mounting plates ready for the pins.

Thanks Dale and Mark. While waiting for the rear end to try I went to make a start on the front axle etc. The kit rims are the wrong style but correct number of spokes, I have the correct rims but in 6 spoke not 5. These rims are also too small for the kit tyres. So, if I can find tyres to fit the 6 spokes I'll use them on the steer and keep the kit ones on the drive, if not it'll have to be the kit ones all round. thinking-hard-smiley-emoticon

I've been lucky enough to come across a site that has a walk around of one of these trucks. (Heaps of nearly helpful pics). I've taken a bit of poetic license with some of the details but overall I think it's an improvement. Starting at the back, I added some level plugs and breathers to the diffs, made up the pins for the suspension mounts and drilled the suspension out for the pins. The kit brakes were pretty much rubbish so I used some Auslowe ones from a trailer kit but the look pretty close to what I saw on the pictures. I've predrilled the boosters ready for some airlines. I have no idea where the power steering pump from the kit is/went so I found one in the spares box along with some front brake pieces, there are none in the kit. To convert it to RHD, I had to juggle things a bit to get them to fit, the pitman arm sits on an angle but is in . Made the brake boosters(white bits) from styrene tube. With the lack of brake detail, you could see through the spokes of the rim so I found some resin spacer, attached the boosters then added them to the front axle. Hopefully I've measured correctly and it all fits under the guards still.

Looking good Deano, I've no idea what half of this is supposed to look like, but it looks a LOT better than before... Couldn't you find a cheap, badly built 1/25 scale plane, or tank,(ebay?) for spares to go in the back ??
Look forward to more from our master truck builder !

Finding the right load will be the trick. These mainly did general type freight not the low loader work but that's not to say it couldn't/didn't. I do like your thinking.
