So since i used the chassis from this under the wagon I was left with a body from the hatchback, and instead of working on the wagion i kept getting distracted by this one so its further ahead than the pics. I am using the chassis from a tamiya alfa coupe and modifying its engine into a vw 1.8t. The cam cover is scratchbuilt and I have a lot of other pieces to go with this. The wheels will be bbs with a healthy dish. I might open up the hatch as I have some plans for the rear (think showcar) involving a cage from a bmw compact, some porsche door panels and an air-ride set up along with seats yet to be decided.
The body before and after moving the rear door window and front door handle back 6mm (the rear window should really be a slightly different shape but keeping it like this gives me the detail that is around the van panels so its staying) The bmw compact cage. It needs a stretch above the doors for a better fit but otherwise lines up well the engine plate the fujimi kit comes with is for a vr6 engine and I thought I could use it as the start of an engine, but this plan changed from a vr6 to a 1.8t 4 pot. I kept the vr parts for use in another vw later the engine top after removal this is where the beginning of the plan for the engine bay took shape the stock alfa engine and how it currently sits Since the glass from the vw is going on the wagon I will be reshaping the glass from the alfa for the front window on this. The rear glass will be from the golf as its not needed for the wagon. Possibly another update later today once i watch street outlaws

Got some more done on the engine this afternoon. I made up the turbo manifold from a couple of matching headers from a v8 kit and used one of the small hobby design turbos. For the air intake for the turbo I used a corner from a sprue and a hobby design cone filter. If you look closely at the pic from the top you can see the turbo outlet is hitting the firewall so my plan to fix that is to trim and angle the outlet. The second pic shows how little room there is behind the engine for the pipe to the intercooler (hobby design again) as it has to go over the driveshaft and then fit between the engine and side of the bay. Hopefully this wont be too bad to build as the inlets for the cooler stick into the engine bay instead of out the sides like the others I have. I have a header set from a drag car that will be providing the pipes for this as they are the diameter I need for this and since they all twist in different ways I might be lucky and some of them fit with just a little trimming. I should probably say that other than the grille and lights (not yet shown) anything resin will be hobby design parts. I also used the tamiya pipes to form the basis of the induction with the rest scratchbuilt

This is one cool project and that 1:1 engine bay is one of the cleanest and non-cluttered bays I've ever seen.

Well I took the engine to work last night to get some more done on it. I got the pipework done then realised I'd messed up and managed to combine 2 different fwd vw engines and as psrt of that done the wrong turbo set up. I can still use the manifold and turbo, I just need to flip the turbo and then it should all work out. The head will have to be all new, as will the inlet pipe from the air cleaner but the air cleaner will be easy to remove and reuse

I got the other side of the body cut and rebuilt at work last night. I dont think I'm going to be finished in time though due to the amount of work I'm doing just now. I dont have a day off until november and I wont do filler at work for the mess it'll make. I'm off to bed now but if i have time before work I'll get some pics taken. Also, never hire a vietnamese plumber, we turned the water on last night then spent the rest of the night finding more and more leaks which isn't good on a boat, lol. Not one tap was tight, some sink plughole pipes were just pushed in place or held with duct tape and the toilets spray everywhere when the cistern is refilling and theres no stop valves on them. I dread to think what I'll find tonight cos so far the snag list is 4 sides of a4 paper and growing.

Its been too bumpy on the boat (its not in balast yet so just ridding the waves) to do much work on this, and when I get home I only get an hour before bed. Unfortunatelly this def wont be finished in time but will stay on the bench and be built in november if I'm not back on long nights again.

Well you'll notice I've moved the thread from motm. I've got a week off and while I would love to get into a hot rod build, this has been sat next the bench. I plan to get a bit more done and with a little luck maybe get the engine redone after my mix up between the 1.8t and tfsi engines. I'll see which has the turbo routed the way I want before deciding as I'd like to save as much from the previous version as possible. It would be much easier to just build the plastic cover and leave it there but I want to have the actual engine on show with plenty of chrome as its supposed to be a showcar and not a driver. I've been missing throwing plastic so this should be fun again. More soon...

It sure feels good to throw some plastic again. I've got the gaps between the patches on the body filled with finger nail filler. It pretty tough to shape but the extra strength it gives is worth the effort. Theres srill some shaping to do so I'll probably give it a light preime in some areas to help with the smoothing. I also added some extra plastic to the sides of the bay so the gaps along the edge are gone and it gives me somewhere to glue the bay to.
