With everything else that I want to do, this kit came into my life and I want to build it...now! The old tag line from Land Rover was "The Best 4X4 By Far" and with its rugged good looks and a no nonsense drivetrain, it is! It is a far cry from what Land Rover has to offer today with a Sport Utility Vehicle. This basic, bare-bones 4X4 has no A/C, no power steering or brakes, no GPS, no leather seats, no auto leveling controls, no electronic wizardry at all, yet this 4X4 could go just about anywhere you point it towards. I am building the Monogram Land Rover kit #2279. The engine will be wired and who knows what other details I can add. I will paint the body with Tamiya TS-9 British Green with a light grey/off-white interior. The tires in the kit are Goodyear Tracker A-Ts and I had painted the tire letters with Tamiya XF-2 Flat White paint and a fine tip brush and some of the lettering was a bit messy. Having bought a new Gelly Roll pen earlier this week, I touchup the lettering. Some of the things about this kit has me scratching my head like why is there a wide spare tire sitting on the hood? Even with a tire that large and heavy, who'd want to pick it up and place it on the hood? More Land Rover to come...

The engine will be wired and who knows what other details I can add. I suppose if you felt like it you could add A/C, power steering, power brakes, GPS, leather seats, auto leveling controls, and some electronic wizardry. Just kidding. I like it bare bones. My uncle had a Jeep Commando that was just as spartan. All business. No fluff. That's what is so cool about these oldies. Right to the point. As far as the spare goes. I have seen plenty of pictures of the African safari vehicles with the spares on the hood. I guess it is for more room in the passenger compartment. Long before the days of under mounted spares. This should be a neat build. Watching this space...

I think the spare on the bonnet is an early form of airbag.. If you get launched through the windscreen you'd hit the tyre! I've also seen picks, shovels and all sorts of gear on the bonnet. Going to be a cool build!

Cool build, I didn't know there was a kit of these. Where I live these land rovers were like mens purses, every nook and cranny would be stuffed with tools and many had brackets on the outside for shovels and stuff.

Thanks Mark, Deano and Les! That is one of the things I really like about the old 4X4s, a basic and bare-bones type of vehicle. Today, most of us who buy a new vehicle wants the A/C, GPS, and all of the other things offered in vehicles today. Many of theses items are standard now because it is easier to install them as the vehicle is being built at the factory than to add them afterwards.

An opportunity to work on the Land Rover for a bit yesterday at my Play Date at Barry's house. I started off with gluing the engine block halves together and painting the engine with St. Lawrence Blue by Polly Scale. This will get a coating of Model Master Acryl Semi Gloss Clear to give it a slight gloss. Next, I moved to installing the front cowl and the upper bed sides to the body. My goal was to paint the body British Green and the top with white, but streetrod, Paul and Pat are trying to get me to paint the body with another color. I'm thinking about it, but I may stay with the green. We shall see... More Land Rover to come...

a google image search has yielded several shades of green, blue, etc., etc.
There is a cool looking beige also. Very military.
I'm sure you'll make the right decision for your project.
Carry on sir....

I didn't know there was a 1/24 SWB around! They are actually a lot different to a LWB underneath and it's a major scratchbuilding task to try to convert a LWB. The new 1:24 Italeri LWB Land Rover Fire Truck arrived with my usual supplier about a week ago and sold out almost immediately.

Thanks for that, it explains why it was a revelation to me (and why I'll probably never get one). The nearest I ever got was this: I was going to convert it into a "cartoon" S.A.S. "Pinkie", but then found someone had done that already...

Well now, if you want on of those, why don't you go ahead and build it? Just because someone else did doesn't mean you can't. If you want one, buildit! sharp, this kit came out around 1981.

I suppose it takes away the appeal; if I can't do something well (which is the case at the moment) I might as well do something different (or preferably unique). I actually sold the kit on a couple of years ago. However, back around Xmas Home Bargains was knocking out the Revell (ex-Italeri) 1/35th Land Rover 109 for a fiver (i.e. less than a third of RRP) and a couple found their way into the stash, with one penciled in as a Post-Apocalyptic Bug-Out Vehicle...

It is your decision to build or not to build. Sometimes, I find someone else's build will inspire me to build my version of what they have done. Besides, I like to build!

If you wish to consider some alternatives Zero Paints have just released a set of Airbrush-ready factory shades for Series III Land Rovers: Very useful with the new tool Revell Series III Four-door LWB being released imminently...

I've been rethinking my paint colors and I may go with Polly Scale GN Big Sky Blue which is close to Marine Blue with black seats and a white roof and wheels. I have plenty of paint colors on hand and I may as well use them if I can.

Mnay people and some manufacturers have shown that a basic, bare bones 4X4 is all you need to go off-road. But, today they sell 4X4s with all the electronic gizmos that todays society demands for on road driving. I have been rethinking my paint choice for the body. In my mind, the British Green is ultra glossy and I don't really want that. It needs to be a bit more subdued. I decided on changing from Tamiya British Green to Polly Scale GN Big Sky Blue with a Tamiya Gloss Clear coat. This color shouldn't be that glossy I have been researching what engine is in this Land Rover and I have come to the conclusion that it is a 2.25 Ltr. Petrol (gasoline) engine. But, what is the second smaller hole in the engine block? Most of the pictures I have looked at don't show the side of the engine clearly. The larger front hole is for a oil tube which is in the kit, but the smaller hole is for a distributor that is not included in the kit or listed on the instructions. I can find a distributor and mount in my parts box and drill it for four plug wires and an ignition coil wire. More Land Rover to come..

Long wheelbase, no top, no thanks as it doesn't interest me. Like I said, "I think mine will be just a stock civilian U.S. Land Rover with left hand drive." Thanks for the suggestion!

Sorry, I forgot to add the , that's what comes of posting in a rush in the early hours... It wasn't a suggestion, I was just being facetious (or, an a$$). I've seen the HobbyBoss 1/35th version, it's a lovely little kit and even has a motor and detailed engine compartment.

I got the 2.25 Ltr. 4 cylinder engine wired and mostly assembled, I just need add the oil filler tube. Then I discovered what the second smaller hole was for in the engine block...there are two nubs on the back of the base of the oil filler tube! I guess I'll have to move the distributor over towards the center of the block and drill a hole for it. I must have been tired last night when I painted the exhaust system before I painted the frame. Well, I'll paint the frame and then paint the exhaust system...again! More Land Rover to come...

In the future, don't do it! Take your time, Roger that! Or, at least I'll try. Unfortunately even after a period of due reflection I'm still likely to post (or say, or do) something really stupid. It happens all to often, comes with the autism thing I suppose...
I wish! My waking/sleeping cycle is a nightmare, part of my long downward spiral. I end up on line at all sorts of hours, often at night when I'm tired but just can't sleep and can't do much else. It doesn't help that I've recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and am just starting a series of blood tests and dose adjustments: either the condition itself or over-medication can manifest as brain problems I've already been taking tablets to treat for many years! Now that I can relate to...

M
