I've entered the big rig build off over on mcm and this is what I will be building. Since I'm not going to be able to enter the sleeper motm which I was looking forward to, due to getting new windows fitted I'll work at this instead. I've gathered a lot of reference pics as I hope to add the wiring and plumbing to the tractor unit and trailer which I know next to nothing about. I've also gathered some orange beacon lights for the cab roof. I wont be doing any body or engine mods apart from the wiring/plumbing as I hope to end up with something half as good as Deano's trucks (its fair to say his trucks inspire me so thanks Dean). I will be weathering the entire build. The trailer will be converted to a flatbed as this trailer was much cheaper than a flatbed one and the rest will not go to waste. The load on the trailer will be a spitfire aircraft but it wont be fully detailed and I'll probably keep the engine out of it for something else. You wouldn't believe how hard it was to find part assembled pics of the spit, but i guess they dont really allow many pics during a war. I'm undecided on the colours but they may be the same as the box art but not as shiny. Finding engine pics was also a bit of a chore as i'm guessing these trucks weren't that common, so I'll be using a later version of the straight 6 for reference and hope its close enough. and one of the reference pics I found today I'll be getting this going next week after my weekend trip away

Nice project mate, and the spitfire engine could be used in a wild hotrod down the track i reckon..

Just found this. This looks like a fun project, and will make for a great, unusual diorama when completed.
And you're right....Deano's trucks are the bomb. Looking forward to this build.

Cheers guys. I'm working on a head board for the trailer just now, and stripping the paint off the trailer suspension pieces (its a part started trailer kit I got real cheap) so I can get them assembled before fitting them to the rails. I'm hoping doing it this way will make it easier to get them straight as there are no mounts at all on the rails I made.

I'm working on a head board for the trailer just now, Over here we call that the "headache rack". What do they call it down under Deano? I'm intrigued by the differences and similarities in languages. Looking forward to this build Les. Carry on sir...

It depends if it's fixed or removable. Headboard or loading board on a rigid (tray truck) or if it's fixed on a semi trailer. Normally they're just called gates, The front and rear ones are usually of heavier construction than the side ones and are normally held in place with chains and dogs rather than ropes, The chain isn't normally too heavy. This build is shaping up very nicely!!

Nice progress Les.
The wooden bed looks quite realistic.
Need to put one or two little gouges in it.

Touch of grimey black paint at the grease points and this will be magic. Places like the king pins, spring hangers, uni joints etc. A few bent rope rails on the trailer will help give it a used look. Keep up the good work two-thumbs-up-smiley-emoticon

Cheers guys, I'm going to be doing more weathering once the chassis is together. I found a weathering set for model trains that has all the shades I might need, so i'll be ordering it on friday. I dont suppose anyone knows where i might find the hydraulic fittings (where the 3 lines connect the truck and trailer) for the trailer, there dont appear to be any in the kit and i'd rather not nick them from another trailer

I think this might be what you need; check out the left-hand side of the first picture, just below the wheel covers and hubs: Look at image 10 on this page for the relevant instructions: Be careful to order the right box of truck accessories, Italeri do THREE different sets...

M

Auslowe do a 'suzie' cable set using nice fine wire. I got the 'fittings' from the local electrical supply shop - some sort of plug for computer cabling apparently. I just cut them out of the strip into individual bits so they can actually be plugged in and out. In Oz, the red and blue are the airlines for the trailer brakes and the black one is for the trailer lights and usually isn't much bigger than what you'd see on a box trailer. Tippers etc will have a hydraulic howse and extra wires for automatic tarps etc. Fine telephone wire is also good if you know a linesman or comms guy but keep it fine

Thanks guys, I'm showing my ignorance here but i thought suzies was an abreviation for suspension, lol

I have no idea why they are called that. Never hear the term used with real trucks, maybe in the U.S?

Hmmm... We never used that term with the dump trucks. It was just "air lines and glad hands".
I googled the term and could only find it on uk websites.
The plot thickens.
