So this kit has jumped to the top of the pile. I'd been looking for one for over 3 years and now its time to build it. I'm not sure if I'll use the body kit pieces but the stance will be addressed though the small size has limited my choice of wheels to tamiya grand cherokee or minilite style rims and the only tyres I have that will fit are slicks. Paint will be green with a tan interior. It feels good to be building a vw again Now does anybody happen to have the instructions for this kit? mine appear to be missing and it was a sealed kit

I think I know why you rarely see these built, the fit of the engine is the worst I've seen and doesn't fit square, the engine bay itself fits together in the same way as a mixed up jigsaw. I've had to add plastic to some sections, have to move the engine mount to where it should be, still have a load of work to do on it, but for the size and age the engine itself is decent. the hood nearly fits but the warp will need addressed I found a set of rims like those for the race version but a couple of sizes bigger, so have detail washed them with tamiya smoke and i've picked the shade of green which is close to one of the stock colours If you look closely at the body you can see where I've adjusted the front panel to actualy look like the stock vw instead of the bozy thing amt graced us with. If this kit had been 1/24 scale I would buy more but i think once this is done i wont consider it again unless its dirt cheap. If i had known how bad the fit is, i would have glued the hood down and built it curbside

The wheels and chassis are looking good Les! I know what you mean about fitment on some of these kits. I'm working on a Revell VW Beetle kit and the front and rear glass just barely fits and the engine compartment hinge is ridiculous it doesn't work at all..lol

Primer is on and I now know the engine bay problems are with it being too short. It needs another 3mm added to the front edge as it should have an overhang above the firewall. If I'd noticed before primer I'd try and fix it as I think it would make the engine sit straight but since I've altered how it mounts so it will sit right I'll leave it. the bay and the inspiration for the smoothed bay

I managed to find time to get the body painted today. I'm goin to let it sit until tomorrow before i paint the window trim and badges. The next major job is the front suspension but i need to find some driveshafts first and some lower arms from something in the spares box.

Got some clear on today. I think I'll give it a 1500 then another few coats of clear so there's enough to polish. I might do the foil before the next clear too.

Man this has been in the box for 7 months!! well now its back on the bench and the rims have changed. These are from uscp and are very nice wheels but I think the size is wrong for a 1/24 dub but looks close enough for 1/25 and since the shop I got them from is ignoring me I decided to use them on this and will save the bbs for another build. I'm doing the foil just now so this one might be finished tonight or else in the morning The centres are tamiya gold (leftover from the ghia) with the rims in molotowe

Got the foil done in the euro style so only chrome on the front and rear windows though it could be had with chrome, black rubber or a mix of the 2. I haven't got the front suspension on yet so its just posed for now. I also copied/stole Dales foam idea to finish off the carbs since it worked so well but I used the foam rubber from some electronics

Well having done away with the wire axle so I could add the driveshafts has turned out to be a mistake. There is nothing to hold the suspension or space out the wheels as my lowering has meant the steering would go through the engine. I think I know why it went back in the box now but I'll figure something to hold it. I've had to thin the grille a lot to stop it sticking out too but since its an old amt kit that probably shouldn't surprise me
