My new project is the Moebius '72 Ford Sport Custom pickup. The cab in this kit was badly warped and I had sent away for a new one. I also have the Moebius '71 Ford Ranger pickup and I tried to get a new cab for that one and Moebius said I would have to buy the cab from them for a replacement. If and when I do decide to build the '71 Ranger, I'll decide further if the cab is fixable. I am going for a two-tone paint scheme on this one. Testors Pearl Dark Green and Testors One Coat Lacquer White Lightning. The kit wheels don't look right to me with a really wide rim to spoke spacing, so I am using a set of Pegasus Hellas and Holli's (19 " and 23") wheels and low profile tires. I'll have to shorten the rear axle to keep the wheels and tires under the fender. The hood fit is terrible and I have been trying to reshape the hood. The frame is partially assembled and almost ready for paint. The engine is partially assembled and will need plug holes drilled into the heads for leads from the MAD prewired distributor. More to come...

Is the cab warping common with this or a one off?

Is the cab warping common with this or a one off? Both kits that I have are warped. I have the '72 Sport Custom and the '71 Ranger and Moebius says it isn't an issue since I was the only one to ask for another cab. I have seen other peoples builds with warped cabs and hoods and the builder doesn't seem to care too much about it. I think the warpage is caused by a too small a box as the parts are jammed in there real tight and the plastic has not had sufficient time to cool. When this all happens, add in the time spent in shipping from China and you have warped product. I wasn't about to fight Moebius over this issue and will try to salvage the other cab when I build that kit. If I build that kit! Since Moebius was recently sold to Pegasus Hobbies, I can understand the need to try and save a buck and my explanations appears to have gone in one ear and out the other. I told all this to my Model Club and some members told me that maybe the club should boycott Moebius by not purchasing their product in the future. Boycotting a manufacturer seems a bit extreme for me and I don't think that is a good thing for the customer or the manufacturer. The manufacturer needs to step up and provide good product in very good condition. Product warpage is unnecessary and if Moebius is unwilling to back their product 100%, then maybe boycotting their product is something to seriously consider. Before turning in last night, I tried to take the bow out of the hood by pushing the center of the hood down with no luck. I tried a different approach by spreading the hood sides with my fingers. This took out a lot of the bow, so I'll try this after running the hood under hot water, spreading the hood sides again and then running it under cold water. I had painted the engine a week ago and gave it another coat last night. I still need to drill my plug holes. More to come...

Firstly, that is TERRIBLE customer service by Moebius. Kind of puts you off supporting them...but I'll be watching this one. I like the F trucks too.

It is terrible customer service! The more I think about this, the more I won't be buying anymore kits from Moebius. I have better molded kits made by AMT from many, many years ago. They may have a ton of flash on the parts, but they are molded correctly and I don't have to do much in the way of bodywork to get them ready for paint.

I think half the trouble is that they dont realise that the people that buy models these days are mainly die hards not so much kids. If what you are trying fails Mike I have had good success using the sun. Something like the hood I would place something heavy like a couple of fishing sinkers or a few coins on the hood and leave it on the window ledge or even on the dash of your car out in the sun, worked for me untwisting a plymouth gtx I had with a twisted body, I put it on a flat piece of timber so it was sitting on the sill panels then used some rubber bands front and rear so it sat level and a couple days in the sun was nice and straight, hope this may help you out

I wonder if a Kenner "Ez-Bake oven" would or could somehow work for helping with warp issues? You would need to use like a 40 or 25 watt bulb inside though for sure!!
Mike, thanks for building this truck!! I have not had a chance to see one being built yet!?! So I'm pretty stoked about watching this!! And the green and white should look great on it!!

Thanks for the suggestion, David! Unfortunately, I do not have an Easy-Bake-Oven, so hot water will have to do. In order to keep the wide wheels and tires within the rear fenders, I had to shorten the rear axle. Just needed a little careful measuring and cutting. I made some pins from 1/16" rod and superglued them into the wheels. I have some Pegasus 19" disc brakes to paint up and add to the wheels. I'll be adding ignition wiring so I drilled out the cylinder heads. These heads look different from the 302 cylinder heads that I normally see online. So I guesstimated where the plug holes should be. More to come...

Last night I assembled the front and rear suspensions. This morning I added the wheels and tires to the suspensions and mocked up the body to check the stance and I didn't like it. The front wheels stuck out and the nose was too high. I decided to cut off the spindles and raise them higher on the I Beam. Another mocked up and this is much better! An old style rake that I really like and the wheels and tires are tucked in under the fenders! Now to clean up the modification I just made. More to come...

Thank you leon! I had thought about lowering the rear suspension, but I nixed that idea. I usually build my models as if they were a 1:1 vehicle. Practical!

I've got the '71 Ranger in the stash and I may have to rework the cab and hood on that one, too. I worked in the F100 yesterday afternoon and I started to think about the colors I have chosen. They may be fine for a stock F100, but this is more of a modified truck. These are my colors now-Dupli-Color Forest Green Pearl for the roof and lower body and Tamiya TS-42 Light Gun Metal for the hood and upper fenders, bed, and tailgate. I finished wiring the engine and building the chassis. The engine is wired in the correct firing order. More to come...

Thank you Joe and Steve! Joe, be prepared to do some work on any of the pickups if you do decide to get one. Everything is TIGHTLY packed in the box and the cab may be warped due to the warm plastic being placed inside. Everything else seems to fit together like it should.

I painted the bench seat this afternoon. Tamiya TS-48 Gunship Grey and Polly Scale So. Sylvan Green. I like the color comboination! While the paintbooth was up and running, I painted the floor with Tamiya TS-48 Gunship Grey and the rest of the interior panels with Dupli-Color Forest Green Pearl. The body, hood, and bed was primed and tossed into the dehydrator for four hours. I will masked the body and paint the two-tone color combination of Dupli-Color Forest Green Pearl and Tamiya TS-42 Light Gun Metal. More to come...

Thanks leon! It has been raining here for days and the humidity is rather high which is causing the Dupli-Color paint to blush as it dries. My usual practice was to polish the paint and the blushing would disappear. That is not possible on some of these parts, so I tried clear-coating them and the blushing disappeared. I may do this more often!

Looks good Mike, as for the blushing problem, here in Tasmania, it is cold for quite a lot of the year, which also causes blushing. What i have, is a 100w Halogen outdoor light, mounted inside my spray booth, it puts out quite a bit of heat, so as soon as it blushes, i hold it in front of the lamp, and watch the blushing disappear, and it seems to bring on a better shine at the same time.

That's a good idea! I suppose I could do pretty much the same by placing my painted parts in the dehydrator and letting the heat do the same.

A little more work done on the Sport Custom today. The dash and the steering wheel was painted, detailed, and decaled. The side panels were painted in Forest Green Pearl and Gunship Grey. I started assembly of the interior, but stopped so I can add the seat belts without any obstructions. More to come...

Nice build and great colours. The halogen lamp idea works a treat. Used to have one in my spray booth but I had to give it up in the great shed reorganization of 2016 when her Jeep arrived - small price to pay?
