I've tried about everything in the past with my photography and the thing that I've found works best for me is a light fixture on either side of the subject that are shined on the front of each side, going to the manual setting with the camera and then after the shot I'll edit everything out with either the "Quick Retouch" or "D-lighting" depending on how dark my original picture was. If the shot turned out pretty dark I go with "D-Lighting", if the brightness is in an acceptable range for me I'll go with the "Quick Retouch".
