Hey all,
The missus and I are starting to plan a holiday for this time next year (or the one after $$$ dependant) for us 2 and the 2 kids. Flying into LAX, then driving from there to Vegas for a couple nights to do the canyon and Hoover Dam, then drive/fly (unsure) to Seattle and back down CA-1 to LAX.
For the locals, what and where would you recommend for us to see and do?
We will have 14 days and will be renting a suv.
Cheers. icon_writing_zps7tebrblw

I did LA,Vegas and the canyon, on my honeymoon, MANY years ago, it was awesome mate, the kids might be a hindrance in Vegas though... We took advise from the travel agent, that was a mistake, as i would never want to step foot in San Francisco again, the place stunk... and very scary ! Alcatraz was the only thing it had going for it in my opinion mate. Hawaii was an awesome stop over for a few days on the way home too , great place to unwind, highly recommended. And your going the right way with a car, we flew too many times, which would have been quicker and more spectacular driving, just getting used to being on the wrong side of the road is pretty nerve wracking. Do it properly though, as the big expense is getting there, and might never happen again. PS:, i could be your driver...

I'm sure the hotel will have a child minding service for a few hours. nerwth_bf-devilsmiley We took advise from the travel agent, that was a mistake, as i would never want to step foot in San Francisco again, the place stunk... and very scary ! Well, contrary to what Dale said, My wife and I LOVED San Fran, and wished we were there a little longer..One word of advice..if you go to SF, MAKE SURE YOUR HOTEL THERE HAS A CAR PARK FOR YOU!!! Most have more rooms than car parks, and parking in SF is a biatch. Once we were there, we didn't drive, it's simply too hard to park.
KEEP YOUR WITS ABOUT YOU!!!We found all over California that neighbour hoods change very, very quickly. you can be in a tourist area, cross the street and it's a different world..within hours of getting there we went to a seemingly innocent supermarket...Wife went on her way grabbing a few things (in the zone) I looked around at all these people in there staring at us..and realised we were the ONLY Caucasians in the whole place!!!
You can probably order 1 meal for the kids to share and 1 meal for you and your wife, as the servings are very generous. Most people are very pleasant and helpful.
Driving to Vegas was amazing!
Vegas has the Carroll Shelby Museum, out by the race track, if that interest you. There is also the Petersen Museum in LA, just down the road from the La Brea Tarpits too. Petersen Always have fantastic exhibitions. FUN FACT. Outside the Petersen Museum is where rapper Biggie Smalls was shot!
Burbank is a very cool area, the George Barris shop is there, on Riverside drive. Also on Riverside is Bob's Big Boy, which is an iconic burger joint. On Fridays, they have their "Cruise night" which has cars turning up from about 2pm, goes 'til very, very late. -You'll see some AWESOME MACHINES!! We saw everything from a 32 roadster, with twin turbos to a pro street '55 Chevy, complete with Wheelie bars, and blown big block to a Completely custom build Peterbilt Prime mover!! Burbank house of Hobbies is also just around the corner-you won't leave empty handed.
We took very little clothing, bought a lot there. We took pretty well Socks and undies and toiletries.
Probably so many more things I've forgotten, feel free to PM me if you wish.

I went to the us in 2000, i only took one change of underwear and went to walmart for more when i got there. Never took any dirty clothes back with me but plenty of other stuff. If your in nashville the nascar diner is good, not bad prices and huge portions and you get to eat under race cars. There was a car museum next to one of the huge malls that was pretty good. We were in florida too as me and my sister wanted to go to disney land to ride the rollercoasters but they were all shut so that was a waste of hundreds of dollars. The only ride we got on was go carts but i ended up puyshing my sister around the track with mine cos her one didn't work. Disney land was a waste imo. Universal studios was good though and had a cruise the day we were there (might just have been the carpark though). In nashville i found a wreckers yard that seemed to be all hearses. New york was good, lots of shopping and i met adam yauch of the beastie boys in the x large store (they own it) and bought loads of skateboards stuff. I got my skateboard taken away by security at the world trade centre coe some fat git was sat on top of the no skateboarding sign so i didn't see it.

Nascar cafe' got shut down a good while back. I think Nascar in general is on its way out. After reading your write up I want to check out the west coast. I have always heard our meal portions are a bit on the big side. And I am pretty sure Turkey isn't a worldwide favorite meat.
