This has been an idea of mine for years. It's had two build periods so far but at the moment it's put to one side while I figure out some more technical issues eg; front end suspension and engine induction. I started with the very ordinary MPC '69 Daytona and the very good AMT Parts Pack Allison V12 engine. The idea is a WWII aircraft inspired and powered car done pro-tour style ..sort of. I went with the Daytona because of the room needed to stuff this behemoth of an engine in and the aero styling with the nose and wing. It'll look something like B-17 bomber in olive drab when done, the roof windows being a particular B-17 feature. I'm calling it "Drive Bomber". Not sure when the end result will be on show but I thought I'd better get a thread started on it and maybe that'll drive me to start working on it again (been building in another genre lately). Concept pic ... A massive hole was cut to fit the engine in, not much Daytona left after that .... Some of the features .... I turned up the rims on my lathe from aluminium tube and used Aoshima wheels for the centers. The tyres are resin cast copies, split and widened. So this is where it's at for now ... Alongside another Daytona for comparison. Note the shortened wing. There's still a massive amount of work to go on this yet, when it'll be done is a wild guess? Traveling for work is slowing down my modeling work these days, so stay tuned and I'll try get updates on this sometime in the future. Cheers TJ

Man this thing looks fantastic, great idea ! You got some great features added already, I'd try and find a cheap 1/25 scale plane and nick as many parts off it as you can. Come on pull ya finger out you gotta finish this one up ! ! two-thumbs-up-smiley-emoticon

Ok a tiny little update just to make it look like I'm working on this again ...with your guys encouragement. So as it was stinking hot day in Adelaide yesterday (42C/107F) I decided to work on this rather than try paint other projects. I cut out the molded door scallops and fab'd in-fills behind. These are probably going to be engine bay heat vents rather than exhaust ports as first envisaged. A bit of mesh inside and that's it. As pitiful as that is, that's all on this one for a few weeks, I'm on a plane tomorrow morning for a month away from home. Next update in Feb. Cheers TJ

That is a very cool, but small update Tim, NICE to see you at least pull it out and do something to it, that is one less thing you need to do now mate..

Wanted to ask, how are doing all the little holes around each panel ? They look great ! The rivets are done with a pounce wheel I made from a small toothed sprocket that came out of an old printer that marks out the spacing then they are each drilled by hand with a fine drill .... hundreds of them! Cheers TJ

Stunning work so far Tim, with the modifications to your idea of using a sprocket to mark out the drill spacing, thanks for the tip, very much looking forward to more of this build

It's interesting! But what do you now put in all those holes you drilled? It sure makes a different look!

It's interesting! But what do you now put in all those holes you drilled? It sure makes a different look! The basic answer in nothing, modern aircraft rivets are flush so I figure the multiple layers of paint will partially fill the holes and look something like flush rivets. Adding proud rivets would look awesome but I like challenging myself not torturing myself! Dang ... now you got the crazy side of my brain saying " Do it ... do it ... 2538 rivets TJ ... do it!!" ........ devil%20and%20balloon_zps60xye84u oh_jeez-1018_zpskf8ctjic TJ

That's a great answer TJ!! I guess I hadn't thought of the paint part. And paint tends to pool in little holes, so this could look very cool then!!
