While looking for the parts to my old skool bug van i came across a 3d print i purchased back in the early days of shapeways. i think it was from tdr but could be wrong about that as i only saw this on there once. being an early print it has a chalky texture to the surface and i'm not even sure if its resin or plastic. but after it resurfaced i recalled a steve sandford sketch i'd seen and liked and one thing led to another so theres a new project on my bench until i get the other bug primed. I think i'm going to keep the sandford styling but i'll make some changes here and there. since the doors are seperate it might be a good chance to try hinging them and adding the door shuts should add some strength to the body as its very thin compared to a resin print. this might be a failed build if the body comes apart. since i'm more vw than street rod i'll be using some 19" fuchs from scale production. very strange texture over all printed parts i'll be using a tamiya bug as the donor but possibly a 911 dash as its wider.

i dont know what this body is made with but even p40 sandpaper is doing nothing to it. i may be brushing thinned acrylic filler on this and losing the rear vents. i tried to drill the headlights out and the drill barely marked it. i might send tdr innovations an email to see if it was them that did this body and to see if i can buy it as a resin print or files. i like the body, just not the material its made with.

That finish on the body does look strange, hope you can sort it out!

Well i'm changing my build order for this and have started priming the body. I figure if i cant get it presentable there would be little point doing the rest. I'm only going to get the body primed and prepped. this is the third coat of primer and it still looks like a sponge. i'll let this lot dry then sand it and start over again. i've been looking to try and find files for this with no luck so far

Looks as though you have a TON of humidity that you're fighting with that bubbling effect going on Les. I've got the same thing going on here in the South Tx Coastal Bend being right off of the coast. Looking forward to the recovery efforts my friend.

Looking forward to the recovery efforts my friend. thats just how the body is mate, its like a hard sponge texture but the filler primer seems to be working.

so far filler primer is working fairly well. i've done 3 heavy coats of primer and have been using a 320 tamiya sponge. after the next coats i'll step up to a 600 sponge before using 800 or 1000 for the last few coats. theres some plastic to clean up on the rear quarter vents but i think i'll be using a pe saw to try and cut those bits off since files and sandpaper are just gliding instead of cutting. but it means the body will be saved and i now need to get the printer running so i can print out a type 3 floorpan and maybe a porsche engine. now i think about it, i could print a front and rear suspension from the blackbox beach buggy too and thus save my bug kit

second round of filler. its looking a bit better now so this lot will be hit with a 600 sponge. i'll prob do 2 rounds of prime and sand with the 600 and that should be it ready for 800 wet n dry. the rear panel is prob the worst bit on the body and being concaved it has very heavy texture i need to buy some alcohol to clean my printer before printing the floorpan and engine

its starting to look better now but theres still loads of priming and sanding to do. i've spent 2 hours with a diamond file scraping stuff away to get the one door to fit better but the other is still very tight it took a router bit in the dremmel to remove the excess from the rear vents still a few more days of this. i was too optimistic before, lol i've fot a set of porsche 911 headlights i might fit if this will cut. that should solve the front lights and at the rear i'll cut away the lights and shape some car light plastic i picked up after a recent crash. i wish more modern cars had orange lights, lol

i'm having to use a different brand of filler primer now, i ran out of duplicolour and the factors didn't have more so i'm trying proline brand. the only other option was simoniz and its watery garbage

Looks like your winning the battle mate, keep at it, it will be all worth it once you get to build the rest of it, knowing the body is GOOD !

i think i might be done with the filler primer, and i wish i'd been using the proline filler primer from the start as it lays down a little thicker and would probably have worked much faster. hopefully have some pics in a couple hours.

Hang with 'er buddy. It wouldn't be the first time for me to say that I wished I would've used a different primer on a build from the start but it looks like you are headed in a good direction with all of this now Les. Will be watching for those pictures.

Dayum !! Yeah that body looked a pig to start with Les but looks like your nearly there... Love the shape of these cars, if the resin body was decent I'd fancy building one myself !

So now i'm happy with the body, i can start actually building this. Since I'm using a tamiya bug donor i decided to slam and narrow it as its the easiest bug to slam. i did it this way ;- custom-model-society.boards.net/thread/3164/lowering-tamiya-bug i also started shaping some 1/1 rear lights (crashes are a great parts source) but it still needs some shaping
