Hi All, Started this one a while ago as something to fiddle with while paint dried etc on the K104 build. This is the donor kit that I'm using. I'll be using the Auslowe resin 4800 bonnet which is shorter than the one supplied in the kit. I'll also use their day cab panel for the rear wall and turn it into a tipper. Kit bonnet is on the left, resin on right. The length of the new bonnet is 12mm shorter than the original and the quarter guards mount to the cab to clear the air barrels when the bonnet tilts. The cab mounts have all been moved forward by 12mm and lifted by 1mm to line the cab up with the new bonnet. I'm also using resin tank brackets and tanks made from conduit. You can also spot where i've altered the Pitman arm and relocated the steering box for the set forward cab. Day cab panel is in. I think I'll remove the kit exhaust mounts ( those 2 big chunks of plastic with the big holes on the cab rear corner) and go more prototypical. Wiper mounts have been shifted for a right hand drive. Tipper body subframe is going on. I've swapped positions for the fuel tanks and battery boxes. My references show them this way on the shorter bonnet models. The left hand fuel tank has 3 brackets because it will represent a split fuel/hydraulic oil tank. The centre j bracket supports the weld and the strap hides the joint. Both kit seats were like the one on the left. I cut one down and reshaped it to look more like the normal offering in a tipper. The seats come with no back, so I sheeted them with styrene.

This is already turning into a good build with all of the fabrication and modification work being done to it Tim. From the hood/ front clip to the wiper arm boss locations to the seats and then the fuel tanks and battery mounts. Frickin' killer start man.

Nice, love those big rigs. Great work on mixing this one up. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this.

The K104 has stalled while I wait for custom decals for the cab. Anyone got any recommendations for a decal supplier?

Thanks for the interest gents. Going to put a trailer behind this, not sure what axle arrangement I'll go with yet. Leaning towards white cab with stripes, red body, red or black chassis.

More superb work mate, this is one seriously awesome work of art mate, the amount of small detail you fabricate is off the chart man !!
That nail pin striping is cool, i have used it on models,( not only on Saturday night's ), bit if you clear over it, go gentle, some of it will blead color a little.

Plenty of work featured in this updates from you Tim. That's a brilliant idea in using brake boosters to replicate the cleat actuator. All of these little details are really adding up and will definitely help bring this puppy to life in the end. Love the microwave plate as a work stand brother.

Holy cow, that is some amazing work. I have thoughts of doing stuff like this and then I see someone actually do it and realize I'm not up for that yet. COOL !!

For me......building one of these things would be like building a 4 engined bomber.......LOTS of work and would probably take me a year or better to build it.

Great work Deano! The bin looks fantastic and so realistic, even before paint! Same with the Ringfeeder and rear end work. Amazing!

I cut the moulding block out of the front of the bonnet and then modified the grill to fit the lower profile of this bonnet. The overall height of the grill needed to be a touch over 3mm lower. I carefully removed the crossbars from the sides by slicing between the bars and the sides. I then cut off the bottom rail of the grill. I then cut down the overlap of the vertical bars above and below the top and bottom cross bars and cut the grill down, dry fitting it until it was right. I then reinstalled the crossbars. I then added the quarter guards to the cab. I taped the bonnet to the cab for this, remounted the bonnet on its mounts but left the cab free to move a little for adjustment in the guards. I had to cut off and reposition the rear cab mount to suit. It's not 100% perfect but once it's painted, I hope I can adjust it the lsat bit when it is assembled. With the quarter guards on, I sat it all together with the tanks and tipper body in place. Turns out the left hand guard rubbed on the power steering reservoir. It was sitting forward of the spring mount so I moved it back a little. This also fills the gap between the tank and the rear of the quarter guard. I positioned my tanks as shown in a layout drawing from the Western Star brochure but they often seem to be a bit further forward in real life, maybe to help with axle weights on the front axle?? Next I cut off the kit exhaust mounts. They provide a nice sturdy mount but the real thing looks nothing like this. Have a few small bits to do to finish the body and hopefully it's ready to paint.

Talk about fancy footwork to get all of that to work with the grill to the bonnet and then again for the quarter guards to clear everything. Good fixes to these areas and although it's a lot of work now.....the payoff will be in the end results. Good problem solving on this one Tim.

Probably one of most important things to make scale kits look more authentic is to have the grill open so you can see through it. Super work with all the extra details.
