I just pulled the trigger on getting a 3d printer. I've gone for an anycubic 4k mono x printer and the gen 2 uv wash station. I dont know what any of the words mean but looking forward to learning. My reason for buying the printer is the majority of the aftermarket parts i've bought recently have been 3d print from america. The postage costs alone for me have been running around $100 each month so my theory is after 5 months the machine will have nearly paid for itself just on post costs. I've been looking around on the file sharing sites and theres a lot of parts available to print at home. Another benefit is that printing 2 of something takes the same time as printing one (as long as it fits the build plate) due to how the machine works. And then there the time savings, currently if i order an engine from america it takes about a month to arrive while with this I can push a buttong and have it in a few hours. For the resin I went with the water washable stuff as the other resin needs a soak in alcohol and i just dont fancy having bowls of flamable liquid laying about so instead i just need to take it to the sink. I'm excited by the possibilities this has. I'm not planning to make a business from it, but will probably have extras available for stuff i print. I'll be teaching myself the drawing side while on the boat at night so hopefully i will be able to create my own parts in time

That's awesome mate, and at least you got a Resin printer, they produce the best quality parts. Hope you get to grips with it pretty quick, a friend uses the site : cults3d.com, a lot of great files at bugger all price.

I've been searching cults a lot, and stlprintables. Lots of cars on both, and because of there being so many modern audis, i now have a full case of the revell e-trons ordered for chassis and interiors. If it all works out i'm hoping to get a cheap second hand printer to do lights for them. I'm excited by learning new things and the drawing my own parts i can do at work. I did sell 30 kits to make space for it which was desperately needed as i have none lol. Its going to be like having the aftermarket next my bench

I've been wanting one of those for a long time Les. Glad you were able to score one and can't wait to see what you make with it.

I can finally open the box the morn, I've got some free files to play about with and an extra bottle of the resin just because i know i'll be making a mess. As far as posting to aus, your almost cheaper to get your own printer. My set up cost me £500 for everything needed except the print files and i've probably spent that on postage in the previous 6 months. The programs for the prints can be found for free if you need to edit them which is my next job to learn. Its fair to say I'm excited enough with whats already avaialable as files so if i can draw my own it makes the possibilities endless. There are body files for most holdens and aus fords but not many mopars for some reason. Obviously its the vw family i am most into and there are hundreds of them, from the beetle up to the latest audis and skodas with some surprises in between. For me though the biggest draw of the printer is i wont have to wait a month for parts to arrive and I can resize them to fit as some printed parts seem to be a bit oversized when its mechanical parts like engines/axles and undersized for wheels so now it shouldn't be a problem. Its been a while since i was excited by something and now i've got a little bit of start trek in my model room

Hey Les !
sorry to hear your struggling mate, but stick with it and maybe you can sell some bits and make some cash back ? When I needed to upgrade my pc (I hate laptops) I looked into it for a while and found a gaming pc suited my needs best. The one I have now is very powerful, incredible graphics etc and lights up like Christmas tree ! I got it from ebay new, around £450.. Good thing is if you ever want to upgrade it just open the side glass and change the part... Simple ! My son has done 3D printing at university, and the design programs are huge . But I'm pretty sure my pc could handle it ok. Just an idea, if you want to find out more I'll find the name of the company where I bought mine, take a look it might just be what you need ??

Thats a good price, the ones i've been able to find are near 2k and i just cant justify that much. The company name would be handy mate

Think it was Gameslay, I'll check. It does have some refurbished parts but comes guaranteed and has been fine all the time I've had mine. Look for gaming pcs on ebay, I worked out the minimum requirements i wanted and looked through till I found one that matched. Good thing is everything is separate parts, you can upgrade any of it without even opening the box.

Well i've ordered a much faster laptop with a lot more power. Hopefully i'll actually be able to print something when it arrives, and it also has the bonus of being suitable for drawing my own stuff too. I've found some pretty cool stuff I'm looking forward to printing and loads of wheels

The laptop arrived last week and since saturday i've been trying to get a print to work. I know its gotta be something simple i'm doing wrong but its really starting to piss me off now. I've used nearly 2 bottles of resin and have nothing to show for it except a few new variations of curse words. I tried asking for help on one of the 3d print forums but they were a bunch of knowitall prats and all i got was belittled. Hopefully i can find someone local to visit and see what i'm doing wrong cos this is driving me nuts

well I'm still fighting this damn machine. from over 120 quids worth of resin i've managed to print one set of wheels and a body (that i broke removing the supports). I cant seem to get this thing to work. I've followed the instructions, changed settings as suggested by people with printers but still its a big bag of fail. I bought this thing to save money but so far i'm spending 50 quid a week on resin just to throw it away. I'm getting very frustrated now and am considering selling the damn thing cos i've got next to nothing to show for it except receipts and a few new curse combinations. I just feel like i've thrown away 1200 quid, and sold 30 kits for no reason. what a waste of time and money, I could have been building something instead of watching this stupid machine cost money

Definitely sounds like a major pain, so sorry bud, I am sure you will get it eventually. Maybe just grab a kit to make a quick build and then go back to it. Sometimes a step back can help clear your mind.

Yeesh! I've had stuff like that happen to me with tools and products that I've bought online. Frustrating to say the least but ol' Tom's got a good idea about just grabbing a kit and building in order get something good going. Hang in there brother.

I've taken a 78 firebird to work with me along with a load of parts i've purchased. I was wanting to use a twin pro charged 572 i have to print but i'm using a supercharged ls instead. Also heres a handy pro tip, if you want help on the 3d print forums you get better help if you pretend to be a teenage girl

Unfortunately this is what happens to most people who get into resin printing mate, unless you are a computer guru, and physicist it it an extremely hard thing to master . I know about 6 people who have given up, and only 1 who succeeded with the 3d printing venture.

I think i have it working now, i did a lot of printing yesterday with variations of support and connections and found some that worked so i'm trying those settings. If this print works i have that 32 i want to print so i can build it this time

I might have gone a bit mad printing wheels, but i'm back at work the morn so i should really get bits printed for one of the audi e-trons. Thinking a set of resized 911 wheels will suit it and i have a matching steering wheel
