This poor old thing was one of my first model truck kits. Dad organised a model railway show in the church hall a few doors up from where we lived in the early 1980's. One of the traders there had the kit on his stand. Legend has it that I stood there for hours looking at it and trying to talk old mate down to what I could afford. Mum eventually loaned my enough to buy it, mainly to give old mate a rest I think!! Anyway it had the longish wheelbase so I had a junked flat top trailer I cut up and used as a tray on it. Years later after years of damage on the shelf, it got packed away and didn't reappear until late 93 when it was repainted straight over the 1st colour, new tray built and a 2 axle dog trailer added. Again, after a while on the shelf and some damage after moving house, it has sat in the 'broken box' until today. I stripped it down and took all the paint off with caustic soda. Just need a little more research before I finally decide what to turn it into to. I'm just going to tidy up the old dash conversion to RH Drive that I did years ago and go from there. Technically, the cab and bonnet are too narrow for the Australian version. These were a lighter duty truck in the U.S with the heavy lifting done by Transtars both bonneted and cabover. In Oz they were beefed up with bigger engines and radiators for our conditions. I'm not going to reproduce an actual truck so it won't matter plus I like the nostalgia of this model.

Nice to see you drag out another old sentimental build mate, it has lasted a long time by the sounds of it. Now that you have learnt so much, and have the skills to create a MASTERPIECE, give it it's final build and paint job, and treasure it for ever mate.

I love these kinds of builds. Good back story on this one and am looking forward to seeing what you do with it Dean.

Ok, looking forward to this. Help me with some of the terms.
What you call a tray, we call a bed right? Does that mean this truck was once like a flatbed wrecker? What you would call a "rollback"?
And what is a "dog trailer"? What we call a "pup trailer" is a 28 footer that would be used for in town cartage to the freight docks, where the freight would then be loaded into a 53 footer for over the road.
Looking forward to watching this come together. You are the truck Master Blaster!
Cheers mate.

Tray/ bed yes but fixed not like a rollback or tilt tray. Just used for general freight, usually on pallets, forked on and off.
Dog trailer has an axle set at each end of the trailer. The front axle set is mounted to a turntable which allows this axle to turn. The drawbar between the truck and trailer on a dog trailer usually throws no down weight onto the truck other than the actual weight of the drawbar.
A pig trailer only has 1 axle group more like the 53 footer but mounts off a hitch at the back off the truck not a turntable. The axle group is to the rear of the trailer and has a solid drawbar so throws weight onto the back off the truck which means slightly less payload in the truck. Dog trailers have a floating drawbar. I'll take some picture to show the difference.

So, for any one interested, First 2 pictures are of a dog trailer. These show the axles at each end of the trailer. Photo 2 show the hinged drawbar and ball race turntable between the front axle frame and chassis. The next 2 photos show a pig trailer with 1 axle group and a fixed drawbar like a massive box trailer.

Very cool stuff Dean. Always thrilling to watch you add all the details. I forgot about those trailers. When I was digging pools the boss thought about getting one but decided against it because I was the only one who had the skill to drive it, and I was the guy that hauled the excavator. I had to call my old boss to see what they were called. They are also referred to as "pup trailers". We had a double axle trailer like your pig trailer (albeit the ramps were a bit smaller). We called it the "equipment trailer". One like yours would be called a "triple axle equipment trailer". Sorry for the digression into vocabulary, but I enjoy learning about anything and everything. Keep up the great work sir.

Thanks guys, there's not going to be detail on this one, kinda worried it might draw the eye to stuff that I'm not real happy with, eg mismatched brake boosters etc. Having said that, have added a few small bits. Chassis in colour. This colour is actually one of my options for the on again off again Mack Titan build. It's a Holts colour called Cape blue and when I tested it for the Mack it looked too blue so I used it here but now that it's actually on something, it might be closer than I thought. The Mack looks black until the sun hits it at the right angle then you get the blue hues without it being a prismatic paint. I added the tailgate loader from the Ford Louisville kit.( Blue and silver Wheeler Sands build). Straight OOB for this this bit, includes the subframe on top of the chassis. I did add some U bolt detail so it looks like the body is properly clamped on. The pan body is also from the Ford kit, The only mod here was to use a second body so I could build it without the side door. I've left the kit roller door out and will use some corrugated aluminium sheet to represent the roller door. Oops, tell a lie. I added the mudguards and taillight brackets. I made the guards from thin aluminum sheet so I could roll the external edges for a more realistic look. I also went with the single wide support brackets just for a different look. And here's a quick mock up.

Got a little more done. The 1 piece rims are a huge pain when it comes to painting, there just isn't a really successful way of masking 1 section out to either paint the rim or the hub a second colour so 1 part has to be hand painted. I chose the hubs, with the darker colour, the brush strokes are harder to see especially on the back wheels. The engine has gone back in. It's still in the colours I painted it all those years ago. It's an International V8 but I painted it in an approximation of GM green to look like an old 2 stroke Detroit engine - I'm not 100% sure they were even an option in the Inter. The tank straps are on using tape as usual, I went with silver tank caps to break it up a little, they may change once it's all together. The cab was painted using Holts gloss white, a different can to the pan so there maybe a slight difference in colour between the 2. Stripped the last of the faded old chrome off o few bits and got some primer on.

Been pretty slack with progress shots of this build but it's nearly there. Wasn't happy with the kit bumper, the chrome had seen better days and brochures show them in a factory silver but it looked crap so I've redone it in white. P.E wipers need to go on as well then it's pretty much done and I'll get some outside photos done.

Looks like you whipped those wheels into shape nicely Dean. I know what you mean about masking wheels like that off. Never fun.
