Found this in an old narrow gauge logging railway magazine and thought I might give it a go. There are another couple of pictures in the magazine but all from the rear showing the log at various points during loading, so not a whole lot more to go on. This is the kit I'll be using. The kit depicts a 1926 model with the 40 hp motor on a 186" wheelbase. The one in the picture was built sometime before 1922 when the sides of the bonnet changed. I'm building the truck pretty much standard OOB. I'll have to scratch build the front log bed and the jinker. Thought I might also try for a diorama of the scenery, not much longer than the whellbase but enough to give an idea of the conditions it worked in.

I have been nibbling away at this 1 in the background, mostly when I need time to get my head around something else. Chassis as per kit. The rims needed a bit of work to rectify sink marks. The bonnet is ready to have the louvres sanded off ready for mesh sides to be cut in and the guards have to be cut off the floor pan.

I had to scroll back a few pages to find this 1!! Anyway, things continue forward. I've cut the louvres out and put a mesh in, not the 1 I planned but this one scaled out to similar spacing to that in the original picture. It took some fiddling but i got it to sit in the cut out, rolled it lightly around a paint brush handle to get it to follow the bonnet shape. I went backwards and forwards a few times on what to to with the cab but ended up deciding to go with a more home workshopped look. First up, I wanted to change the factory metal steps out for timber ones, so I cut the bulk off just leaving enough to act as brackets for the timber. I thought this might be stronger than putting new ones on. Next up was the cab roof. The photo is a little inconclusive as to what they have actually done so I've assumed it was a half cab that they have added a roof to. Factory ones are metal where the picture shows a lot of timber so maybe it is a repaired factory one??? Either way, I hope this will add to the character of it. I used 2mm angle for the frame and 1.6mm rod for the stays with the ends flattened out to suit the original mounting points. Plastic bolt heads for detail.

Got the jinker together. despite a pile of research, I couldn't find the detailed shots I needed so I just made it up as I went. I used the rear suspension and chassis section from an earlier build where I converted the truck to run on rails. I had to add a little to 1 end to get the balance right. As best as I can tell, a lot of these early loggers where home built and on the cheap. To hook the jinker to the truck, a suitable log was found and fed through the hoops under the trailer and into 1 at the back of the truck. The 1 on the truck pivots to allow the trailer to turn. I'll be adding a wire rope that passes through the crossmember, under the hoop and back up to the crossmember on the other side. This will help take weight off the pivot but will also help the hoop return to the centre position after a turn. Next up was the bolster, again, I just went with my own devices and mounted C channel on top of the chassis for weight distribution. Another wider piece was used as the bottom runner to help clear the wheels and another piece turned the other way to act as the mounting plate for the timber bearer. I added a few bolt heads for detail. This one doesn't pivot so was pretty straight forward. The one for the truck followed the same principle but needed to be able to pivot. I made up a pin and used washers to act as the pivot. C channel was used to act as the skids to help stop it from binding up after a turn. I might need to add limiting chains to restrict the how far the trailer could turn ( to stop them from rolling over? ) live.staticflickr.com/65535/51326118114_f5400a4717_b.jpgThe plastic tube represents the log beam. It seems that only 300mm or so protruded through the truck hoop but the beam was usually long enough to allow the jinker to be adjusted to suit the load at hand. Paint is up next.

Wow!!! That is some EXCELLENT fabrication work Dean!!! I really like what you're doing with this build. It's interesting about the phone number on the fender of the truck. Only 4 numbers. lol. If only things were that simple again.

Thanks men, your support is greatly appreciated. Base coat of rust colour on. Although it's hard to see, 2 shades were used to try and give a little variation. Most of this colour won't be seen but thought I'd use the chance to try a new technique.

Got the colour on the cab> It's a Vallejo acrylic called dead flesh. It came in a set for painting figures and I couldn't see myself using it for anything else. Prior to the colour I sprayed Vallejo's chipping medium on. It sprays clear and doesnt cover at all well but I suppose that's the point. Even at this stage you can see it having an effect on the paint. Ignore the big marks, that was me being careless! So once it has dried, wet the model and a stiff brush and start rubbing away. It certainly gives a chipped effect where the hairspray method is more of a worn or faded paint effect ( the way I do it anyhow). I need to do a little more detail painting with it to give it a little more variation but you can see where it is going now.

Thanks very much guys. I'm stoked with the result, little more practice will help but so far I think it was worth it. I took the opportunity to have a go at detailing the seat, not sure I got it right but did learn a bit in the process. So this is the seat kit as it comes. I cut the majority of it out, just leaving enough to act as a frame. False back and base went in next. I then cut the seat in half and put a back in the base section. The inserts were then painted black. Sponge type foam was found, sliced thin and glued to the top half of the seat. The LHS of the base ( as you sit on it) was also done in the same way. On the RHS, I had a go at making it look like a sprung seat. I'm the first to admit that I have no idea what the seats were in these old trucks, might have been stuffed with horse hair for all I know!! That aside, this is the result. I then used some suede to cover the seats with. It's a little thicker than I would have liked but superglued into place nicely. I wasn't sure if I should have made two halves to the base or not so used the copper wire to act as piping through the centre line of the seat. I then tried to make the fabric look worn but it's a lot tougher than it looks! I didn't want the seat to be unusable, just to look worn out and uncomfortable. I still need to weather/stain the seat up. I have a few left over bits that I'll have a practice on first.

Spanish moss...They were stuffed with Spanish moss because it didn't deteriorate and bugs/rodents wouldnt eat it. How many are gonna know that though right?? Seat springs look right. The whole thing looks right! Still takin notes here.
