Modeling Friends I know it has been a while since I was last on here but thought some of you might want to know this if you do not already know. I received an email earlier informing me that they will no longer be publishing the Scale Auto Magazine. The October 2020 issue will be the final issue. If you have a current subscription they will be moving you to Fine Scale Modeler. I for one want my auto content separate from all other forms of modeling. I called in to cancel before they switch over the FSM. I was told in order to get the last issue of SAM that I would have to call back in August after they pull the last issue for mailing. The end of a great magazine is upon us!

Now THAT sucks!! I never thought I'd see it but the days of streamlining have caught up with Kalbach it looks like. Fewer staff needed to run one magazine I guess.

Very sad. I owe getting back into the hobby to the June 1992 issue. End of a era. We now have no Magazine representing car modelers.

It is a shame, although I'd only buy the contest magazines myself.
I can understand producing the magazine is too expensive, but I'd have thought they could have kept it going with an online publication ?

Just re-upped my subscription in January...I haven't gotten any notice...Perhaps we should start our own Magazine...Enough talent and know how here to pull it off. We just need a publisher, a business manager, an editor, Everyone else could/would be freelance. Yeah, that really stinks!

We just need a publisher, a business manager, an editor, Everyone else could/would be freelance. Yeah, that really stinks! We could just combine all of us and do a blog, if it took off then maybe turn it into a magazine. I think there is a way to do it through an epublishing site so that if people want a paper copy, they can get them printed through the site, otherwise its all online content. I'm sure between all of us we know enough people that could contribute too. I know I'm a member of lots of other forums all over the planet and I think your might be a winner if its done right. It would need to cover big trucks and tuners too cos they seem to be sadly lacking in scale auto. I might have to look into the epublishing stuff if anyone else is up for it. I think the scale lowrider mag dedicated is done this way

I like the idea of starting our own "Custom Model Society" magazine. I am going to investigate this a bit. I know I could swing some financial support, and some over all scheduling / coordinating support, (thats kind of what I do anyway). Would definitely need some writer / artist support, we have LOTS of that here if all would be interested. I have a few friends in the advertising field I will talk to about this, see what may be the best, but least expensive way to launch a project. I will also contact our attorney for guidance on the legal ramifications and who would be best to help get this going. Very cool idea guys, lets not shoot for a profit at first, instead lets use this as a platform to launch our auto model building hobby. Totally volunteered / donated, that would help to get it going I would think.

I've been looking into using mag cloud for something Tom, that way we would just have to do the layouts and then folk can decide whether to get a printed copy or digital and magcloud take care of that side of things. The downside to them is it looks like they only print in the usa and uk but the copies look nicely printed with proper spines instead of just staples, but they seem to start at 10 bucks each copy

That sounds like a cool way to approach it Les. The little bit I have looked into it, everyone wants an arm, a leg, and a couple toes for their services...

I got my copies of model car builder from mag cloud and I have to say they are nicely printed. At first I thought they were a bit thin but after comparing them to scale auto there is nearly as much inside and the thinneness was down to no ads. If anyone is interested I was thinking to maybe see about getting all of the contest winners put together so we can all have the option to buy a printed or digital copy. I think I would aim to do this in january next year with all the winners up to december, and then get a bit more serious about doing some sort of regular mag. Still lots to do before then but I thought I'd put the idea out there to see what everyone thinks. I think the price would be around $10-15 US for a printed copy and a little less for digital. I would also need permission from everyone to use their photos for this. I'm sure between us all we could make something people find useful and entertaining as I would aim to have something more light hearted than what is already out there. I'm thinking keep it to scale vahicles but have one page that shows off the other styles of modelling, from military to gundam to even dolls houses as the levels of detail in some of them are not what you'd expect from them. If anybody has any ideas feel free to throw them out there for what you would like to see in a model mag

I like the idea of all of us showing off our car prowess, but I very much like the idea of being able to see other subjects too. All the talent on offer should have somewhere to be seen and appreciated.
