You could try drilling a couple of holes all the way through the next attempt and then gluing some rod down the centre. It should stop the glue adding extra thickness and still be plenty strong enough to hold it, plus it will give good location points for the heads and the cylinders themselves to mount to the engine. The heller bike I built had them done that way and it worked well on it
