Hi everyone. Guess I'm like a lot of other modelers. I started as a pre-teen with planes and ships and quickly moved over to cars. Been with cars and trucks ever since and that's about 60 years, on and off. Like a lot of other folks, life got in the way many times and I had to put modeling on the back burner for awhile. Now that I am fully and completely retired, I can devote more time to the hobby that I love. I am from NH but have lived all over due to 23 years in the Army. Upon retirement from the Army, I spent 13 years in Florida working as a corrections officer. Fast forward a few years and I found myself back in NH working as a Corrections Officer where I would still be had I not got injured on the job and was awarded a full medical retirement. Modelling helps with the PTSD. I am going to try real hard to enter some contests but frankly, I cannot hold a candle to what I've seen on this and the other site. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks for the welcome guys. I will, from time to time, be asking questions. Even though I have been modeling for a lot of years, it was only just recently (last year) that I attempted to venture out of my comfort zone and do something besides just box stock. I just can't seem to get the paint jobs correct. I have tried the air gun with the propellant cans to absolutely horrible results. I would like to try with a real compressor but right now that is out of my budget. I am relegated to rattle cans. Lately these haven't been too bad but could be better. Thanks for listening and I will be asking questions. On the desk right now is a 56 BelAire, 55 Nomad, and a 32 Ford three window coupe. The 32 is my first attempt at chopping a top. That came out ok now I am trying to figure out the interior panels.
Oldguy out.

Ok folks. Another year is here and I have finished another model. This one is a 56 Chevy. Now for a question: I have seen models posted with the paint job being nail polish. I tried that on one of mine and it came out absolutely horrible. Now the question is; is the nail polish applied straight from the bottle with a brush or with an air brush? I did however have decent results using the polish straight from the bottle on interiors. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm an old retired vet like you and glad you are here. Nail polish is best used with an airbrush. DeeCee is our paint guru he can really help you with paint issues.

Hey ol' fella, firstly welcome aboard mate, get into the building and enjoy doing it... NAILPOLISH.... I run it through the airbrush, and treat it like paint... i thin it with automotive thinners, ( quality stuff). Test that the polish will mix with the thinners first, as some will, some won't, if it does not mix and thin properly, toss it. You will need a good primer to seal the plastic, as auto paint and nail polish are 'HOT", and can eat into the plastic. Sometimes it pays to use a base coat of similar color ( i use auto acrylic), as nail polish does need quite a few coats to cover, as it is fairly transparent. To get a good finish, the prep work must be PERFECT, it is just like painting a real car in my opinion, don't be scared to go back and re-block the primer or base coat, it might put you a few hours behind, but the final result will be worth it.. Then i clear it with auto paint as well, multiple coats, block it back with 2000 wet/dry, then re-clear. Then it's time to polish.. A paint job will only yield, what you put into it. If you have any questions mate, feel free to ask, happy to help .

Thanks Big D and DeeCee. My next purchase is going to be an air bruch and compressor. I have been reading the threads on here concerning these items and I think I have found the one I will start with. Now just got to have the extra cash. I don't get to work on models every day and with this cold weather, painting has become a problem. Oh well, spring is just around the corner.

Welcome Oldguy and thanks for your service! Modeling is a learning process that you can take to whatever level you wish. My paint jobs aren't nearly as good as some that are here, nor is my engine detailing or body alterations, but I build at a level that I enjoy and I believe that is what modeling is for...enjoyment! I am going to try and push myself a little harder on a couple of builds this year just to grow a little. We'll see how that goes... Bananezorro

Thanks AK. I too build at a level I am comfortable with. I have noticed improvements just in the last year or so. I would like to enter some of the contests but my picture taking ability is, how shall I put this, not the greatest, in fact I suck at it and then I can't seem to get them to post. I have tried PB and Flickr and it just don't work. I will keep tryin' though. No doubt I am doing something wrong, but I will figure it out.

Im sure you ve ben told before but... when I load the pictures to PB I click on the picture which makes it big. Then on the right side of the screen there will be a set of links. I click on the one at the bottom labeled IMG and copy it. Then I open a new page here and paste it. This works on my laptop. On my cell its a little more complicated but still the same process. Hope this helps as we would all love to see your work!
